I thought this was a cracking read and an excellent cautionary tale about what could happen to any nation overly reliant on modern technology, having forgotten how to be self sufficient via the 'old ways' that is brought low once the technology is taken away.

The book is completely plausible in it's premise that an EMP could knock out a nations electronic/computer infrastructure which would lead to communities becoming isolated from one another as transportation links etc fail. However, like any

I liked this book enough to read it twice, but the second time I remembered the problems I had with it the first time. It's nice to read something that has a different incipient event than your typical post apocalyptic novel, but the author tells you a lot instead of showing you. Also, there's a lot of "lessons" about how unprepared we are for an event of this type, almost after school special. The point of this is not to entertain, but to raise awareness. Also, fairly conservative

I enjoyed the concept of the book and the story kept me engaged. I wish the characters had been more fully realized and there had been less 'preachiness'. ...more

This was a well researched book. I appreciate the work Mr. Forstchen put into studying the effects of EMP, and the types of problems that a small town would likely run into if all of our modern conveniences suddenly stopped working.

Having said that...

The political message in this book is very heavy handed. I realize the author and his friends believe we are very vulnerable to an attack of this type, but once the point was made, I believe it would have made for a better story to just move on, rat

This was a good page turner and well-concieved post-apocalyptic landscape but the author's conservative views came through A LOT! There is only one woman leader who you barely hear from. Any incompetent soldier in training for protecting the community is a woman. Only women characters with any depth are the main character's family members and his love interest. He uses the words Stalinism and Communism any time there is sharing in the community. He uses the book as a platform to be pro-military ...more

Fantastic! This book was moving, scarey, action-packed and heart-breaking. I can't believe how fast our world could disolve after one EMP bomb. I won't lie. This book got me to thinking about creating a disaster plan for my family. Not that we would have much of a chance if this event happened. Thought provoking stuff. ...more

Listened to this on audio. Heard it was THE read for preppers and fans of prepping, so I gave it a go. It was a pretty good read. Engaging, decent characters.
