As this book is considered literary sci-fi I was attracted to it but also a little concerned that in the effort to achieve literary status the author might have discarded the essence of sci-fi.
My first impressions were that the style of both the writing and the story-telling were a little old fashioned. It was lighter on the science philosophy and also less chauvanistic than such classics as Heinlein and Dick. This was a really interesting book. Very well-written too. There were some sentences and metaphors that I just marveled at. It's what she calls "speculative fiction," which means it's kind of like science fiction but, like Handmaid's Tale, she takes elements of our current lives (in this case: global warming, genetic engineering, rampant consumerism) and plays them out to what appears to be a logical conclusion. So, the full review. First the positives. Margaret Atwood's writing! She writes so elegantly, I kept wanting to highlight sections and I never highlight. The world and the story was amazing and felt very real, like there's a very real chance humanity could destroy itself in this way. However, I think in certain parts she went too far, like how far we (as a species) could dull ourselves to sex and violence.
