This is both 2 stars and 4.5 stars, so I'm not sure how to rate it. The story is a great one: nuclear sub survives global nuclear war. Told from the point of view of its Captain, the books mainly follows the ship and its crew through the aftermath as they attempt to determine who/ what is left -- and what the rest of their lives will entail.

Not so great: The author clearly reveres the Captain as a model of Navy uprightness -- the reader is mostly left to think that the Captain is an emotionally-

This is a re-read for me. When I originally read this book in 1987, I thought about it for days after. Reading it again was just as riveting. I couldn't put it down. Brinkley took me right back to Cold War thinking. He made me remember how hard it was when women were first deployed into active duty in the military. It’s very rare that I chose not to finish a book once started, but ‘The Last Ship’ was so fundamentally boring, it just turned me off reading, so I ditched it after 100 pages.

Said first 100 pages is full of the extreme granular detail of the innerworkings of a battleship in the US Navy, replete with incomprehensible naming/ranking conventions. All very interesting I’m sure for aficionados or those with at least a passing interest in the Navy, but for the uninitiated it’s highly tedious.

A fun story of nuclear Armageddon and lust at sea, if you get into those sorts of things. I know I do on occasion. Recommended for aging Cold Warriors.

A great story, but it was a little long-winded with the nautical descriptions. Probably great for anyone in the Navy, otherwise you might want to skim some parts. Worth reading though.

Very flowery words and sentences...some predictability to the story, some not.
