Initial shock of the setting was quick to wear off, leaving only the heroine's spinelessness and the occasional wisp of fine prose. I've been reading rather a lot of dystopian works lately, which makes it clearer just how difficult it is to bring some fresh blood onto the scene. _A Handmaid's Tale_ struggles in numerous areas -- why, for instance, are the uppermost echelons of this society scarcely mentioned? *Someone* must be benefiting from this setup in much the same manner as O'Brien in _198

I am reading the novel, not listening to the CD.
Well. I have to say I was slightly disappointed. I couldn't put the book down but because I kept waiting for something juicy to happen. It was long winded in parts and although I know it is suppose to thought provoking etc... I didn't feel it.

Quite frankly, one of the most disturbing pieces of fiction I have ever read. I'd hazard to say that nearly every woman who want to know the value of her body outside of her own dreams and desires should read this book.
