What Members Thought

I thought it was about time I saw what all the fuss was about with this book, after hearing it referenced so many times by other authors (Stephen King) and film directors (George A. Romero) as inspiration for their own work.
It's a short book and I found myself literally plowing right through it in a few sittings. I won't ruin it for you but I found myself almost in tears at one point where our lonely protagonist tries to befriend a stray dog.

I picked up I Am Legend because I heard they're remaking the movie (previously made as Omega Man with Charleton Heston) with Will Smith in a more faithful adaptation due later this year. The story is a sort of classic end-of-the-world zombie scenario, except with vampires instead of zombies. It offers a great twist on the sole-human-survivor theme.

I don't normally enjoy vampire tales; I Am Legend is a striking exception. The book is about despair, fear of difference, and the birth of hatred and of legends.

From all accounts, this book bears NO resemblance to Will Smith's santized film by the same title. Neville is a man of passions, confusion, and single-mindedness, attempting to fight off the way of the new world. I listened to this on audiobook, and it was spectacular, but the end was the real payoff to the whole story.
