Four and a half stars.

In many ways this was a good look at some of the problems that would arise if a cure for aging were discovered. It would cause all kinds of social upheaval.

I was interested in the main character and his problems and I think it was good that the story spans so much time.

Magary employs a technique that I think is becoming more common. The main story is a "found" document many years later that's supposed to put things in historical context. Think The Handmaid's Tale.

here's what I wrote under "why we're reading this" on the group page for Apocalypse Whenever, the goodreads dystopian fic reading group:

-------------

This is about the not-too-distant future where a cure for aging has been discovered/created. People can get the cure and live indefinitely without aging beyond the day they receive the cure. However, people can still be killed by any means other than old age. This, of course, causes several forms of societal upheaval, and many unanticipated problems

This is one of the best books I've read in a while. It's speculative fiction. What would happen if there was suddenly a cure for aging. Like, you could never die from old age. People still die, from murder, illness, etc., but not old age. And not only that, but your appearance doesn't change from the moment you receive the cure. So, people 100 years old walking around looking 25.

And it's pretty bleak, to be honest. But never not entertaining. It's well written and the protagonist is like-able.

Interesting but rather depressing. A scientist trying to find a genetic way to change his red hair instead accidentally modifies the gene that controls aging, and the cure for aging is discovered. Not the cure for death, mind you. Someone who's been cured could still get cancer or get shot or get hit .by a truck. But those who are cured cease to age as of their "cure date." In the short term, a few extra people not aging and not dying off as expected doesn't make a big difference. But o

What an awesome book. I can't stop thinking about the topics he brought up, like how love comes and goes and what life would be like if we stopped aging. Fascinating and a good plot and interesting details throughout. ...more
