SPOILER-ALERT (Kind of): READ WOOL BEFORE YOU READ THIS REVIEW.
So I LOVED Wool but this prequel - which explains how the world became so "toxic" that survivors must remain in underground silos - was not nearly as satisfying for me. The thing is, I think it bothered me most because it was so uncomfortable to watch us do this to ourselves. That's some good writing to get me there emotionally. First Shift is a prequel to Wool. It alternates between 2049-2051, where we read about Congressman Donald Keene's story of being essentially tricked into joining the project and designing the silos, and 2110, where "Troy" is brought out of cryogenic hibernation for his first six-month shift leading Silo 1.
In the 2040s parts of the story, it was interesting to learn a bit about the how and why behind the silos. I could ...more

The shift series picks up the story of Wool. OK actually I guess it doesn't pick it up since its a prequel but it continues the journey into the world of the silos.

A great "prequel" for those who have read the "Wool" series (and I recommend reading that first). You can tell Howey wrote Wool without thinking about a "prequel," and he has taken his time here to really make a sensible, believable prequel with no holes.
