A quick, bleak read. Very digestible. Written at a time when all of this must have seemed very real. Like other stories, this one does a great job of showing the end-state futility of nuclear war. All out nuclear war is not a possibility in a sane world, it is only a way to force parties to either fight it out conventionally or go to the table.

I was in the mood to re-read this. Macabre of me, I know. It still holds up, remains one of my favorites. I love Shutte's style, his words flow for me. Poiganant, scary and sad, this story captures the essence of ordinary people facing their end. A must read.
