So you should know that I received a free copy of this book for a fair and honest review.

This book is not for everyone, nor would I recommend it for everyone. It is violent, gruesome, and our protagonist Shelly has a few borderline personality issues. Having said that, it is also well written, action-packed, and well worthy of 4 stars, in my humble opinion, for zombie-horror fiction.

A recent divorcee, Shelly awakens to a world turned into zombies, or grinners, after a blood-red night-sky knocks the world on its butt. Quick to take matters into her own hands, Shelly sets out to rescue her younger brother Michael. Along her quest, she encounters a variety of people, including an old mate who quickly becomes zombie food, two annoying teenage girls, a young Cajun with a crush, and a police dog named Trigger. Of all these people, Shelly would rather save Trigger than anyone else. All the rest, she's ready to cut loose at the first sign of trouble, particularly if she thinks it will get in the way of her lost cause - rescuing her younger brother.

As much as I enjoyed the book, I did not really like Shelly at all. I couldn't understand why she would choose to walk 2 miles to the convenience store to open a can of peaches when she knew she could just knife it open but didn't want to cut her hand. I couldn't understand how she could drink beer in a house that had cockroaches on the fridge and maggots in the sink - and that was before the grinners showed up! And I also couldn't understand Shelly's proclivity towards vomit - it seemed like every chapter she was vomiting or close to it.

Yes, can you tell I didn't like good ol' Shell? And I really don't think it was because she tried to act tough, because I get that. I just genuinely didn't see her as a nice, or a smart person. Now our Cajun Cyr, and good ol' Trigger - there were some partners.

The action and pacing of the book were great - I was never bored, and kept wanting to read late into the night to see what would happen next. Lots of blood and death and the stench of decay. Stay away if you get nauseaous easily, that's for sure. There are a few editorial issues throughout the book - common mistakes like its/it's, their/there, fowl/foul - that could use a quick clean up, but nothing that detracted from my overall enjoyment of this great read.
