This author has a clear, easy to read way of writing, with pretty clean text. The idea behind this plot - a virus that turns everyone into bugs? Sweet. A kick-ass heroine? Nice. Sex? Bonus!

As it happens, once I hit the eye-rolling zone, I had difficulty getting out of it. Either you can roll with it or you can't, and at the time I just wasn't in the mood I think. This is heavy fantasy, and I'm more of a sci-fi gal (unless we're talking magic). It's also got quite a bit of spirituality in it. It's more of the ghosts, mysteries, and vision quests sort. Sounds ok on the surface, but not my thing at all. So, while I had a lot to complain about in this book, I'm not going to say it was bad. I am going to say it was bad for me. Yes, there is a difference. :-)

So, our leading lady, she likes sex. She falls in love just like *that* (that's fingers snapping there). She's badass. She knows how to do all sorts of things the rest of us mere mortals have never, nor will ever, learn how to do, if we have ever even heard of them in the first place. Men like her. A lot. There are a lot of strange excuses for sex in this book. Usually I'd find that a bonus, but in this one, since I felt no connection to Evie, well... meh. Tingle-free. Oh well.

The men that don't like her want to use her. There are definitely some ugly scenes in this book. If you find sexual assault scenes uncomfortable, skip this one. Don't let someone try to convince you it's part of a bigger spiritual journey plot blah blah blah, because it'll still make you uncomfortable. I was bothered by the fact that apparently all men are either evil or saints in this book. They bear little resemblance to the men we know - and while I think in a post-apocalyptic scenario people would change, sometimes quite severely, the recounting of those changes here was just too unbelievable.

Anyway, if you're considering this book... give it a 1/4 of the way. You'll know by then whether it's going to work for you. I was good for the first few dozen pages but knew by page 100 it wasn't going to go on my list of favorites. 2.5 stars.

Follow this author: Actually, I just might read more by her, but I'd do a little research first.

I really liked it. Not what I expected. I had no idea what is was about. I was thrilled it was a Post Apocalyptic novel. Excellent read.
