After North America was almost destroyed, the nation of Paem emerges. There are 12 districts which they keep under a tight rein by staging The Hunger Games each year. Where two "tributes" from each district fight to the death in an arena. This has become great entertainment. This year, Kaitliss' sister is chosen as tribute so she steps in to take Prim's place.

I really enjoyed this book. Her fight for survival drew me in and I kept turning pages, reading this in one day.

This is exactly the kind of science fiction I like. Gritty and dystopian with a few candy-colored oddities here and there. I'm also a sucker for fight-to-the-death scenarios, a la Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Koushun Takami's novel Battle Royale. I found Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games satisfying, but there were a few things that stopped me from giving it a full five stars. Premise: A story set in a dystopian future society built on the ruins of America where a yearly tradition requires that kids hunt other kids. Think Fallout 3 meets Ender's Game plus The Most Dangerous Game.

It's an entertaining and quick story (I read it in one weekend) that left me thinking about traditions, exposure to violence, and retribution in different societies. However, there's something about reading books that feature violence directed at children that doesn't make me feel comfortable.

The first book is excellent and compelling. Effective at portraying the type of conflicted and paranoid personality that might emerge from growing up and being placed in such callous conditions as Katniss Everdeen has.

I have only two complaints, small as they are, and one I cannot share for fear of spoilers-

So, my one audible complaint is that I wish the villains were more thoroughly fleshed out. The general people of the capital were, but in particular I would have liked to know more about Snow
