I'm not a huge science fiction fan, but strangely I liked Girl Under Glass. I picked it up because the post-apocalyptic world Rachel lives in sounded intriguing, although I wasnt sure about the alien aspect. With that being said, Rachel is a fascinatingly messed-up girl with some serious adversity in her world. I loved Pearl, Rachel's daughter, and the lovable guard dogs, Audie and Jack. Reading this one for the Apocalypse Whenever discussion for August.
My bad, I should've read the author bio first, then I would've known her bag is romantic sf, romantic fantasy and romantic gothic, which leads me to believe the romance is the main thing here, not the SF. The pacing is off, the science is off (most of the SF elements seemed very Star Trek-ian), and the main character has some kind of personality transplant midway through the book.

DID NOT FINISH.
The generally positive reviews gave me hope for this, but said hope was crushed fairly early on.
Way, way too much telling and not showing - about the world, about characters, about traumas, which ended up with very little emotional impact, even when a character was flashbacking.
Read to about 40% and decided to abandon. There are too many other books to read, I'm not sticking with one that's only meh. ...more
