Author of The Surrendered, Lee tries something new in On Such a Full Sea. Set in the somewhat distant future, B-Mor (formerly Baltimore) is one of dozens of communities across the country that are self-contained. People live with their extended family in "clan" houses. Life is managed by the government and to wander outside your community is considered dangerous and revolutionary. But that is exactly what Fan does, the young heroine who goes in search of her love, Reg. The outside territories are dangerous and lawless, but Fan finds herself taken in by 2 different communities, and protected to some extent. People steal and sell other human beings if it fits their needs, and Fan finds it is almost impossible to trust anyone. Lee is an accomplished writer and his prose is a pleasure to read. If this novel doesn't grab you, read The Surrendered, which takes place in South Korea, at the end of the Korean War.
