It seems that Rebecca Skloot was trying to do a lot with this book and in the process delivered very little. Had she narrowed her focus she might have written a good book. But that's an awfully big "might."
The issue of racism lurks throughout but is never addressed head on. Instead, Skloot sprinkles overtures and hints of racist behavior in clumsy and heavy handed ways. At times she seemed to be an apologist or a race baiter. This quote puzzled me:
