A sort of fairy tale for adults, involving a 9 year old girl and her school teacher. Girl's mother is dead, girl is a would-be singer of jazz classics, and teacher is divorced and encountering her high school crush. It all fatefully comes together at 2:00 a.m. at the Cats Pajamas, a dilapidated jazz club in Philadelphia. While this novel is not deep or lengthy, the characterizations and scene-setting are carried off with quite a bit of charm, and some humor. We are asked to muse on how humans deal with tragedy and loss, but not in a morbid or mournful way. B+
