Ada and Jamie live in London. They are extraordinarily poor and ill-kempt. Ada has never left there flat. Jamie is her primary companion and she loves him dearly. Her mother is a harsh woman who has never shown Ada any kindness. She is angry with and ashamed of Ada because Ada was born with a twisted foot.

As Jamie ages Ada realizes that one day he will leave her to go to school, something her mother will not allow her to do. As World War II approaches children from London are being sent to live
