[close] The Dinwiddie Book Group just finished this one, and liked it quite a bit. We concluded that it starts slow, as you become familiar with the main characters in the first 100 pages, but then takes off and becomes a page turner. There is a great deal of accurate historical material here; there was indeed intense suffering in occupied France during World War II, and indeed some people tried to be heroes while most tried to survive and keep their own families safe. This kind of story naturally induces us to wonder which group we might fit into. Under the sadistic Nazi practices of collective punishment and execution of random hostages, it is hard to imagine ourselves showing the amount of courage shown by both young women in this historical tale.

Slow to get in gear, due to need for exposition. It does become a page turner for the last two thirds. While suspenseful and engaging, this is not up to the level of literary depth that one might experience in, for example, WW2 tales such as "sophie's choice" or "The book thief." ...more
