In the second book of The Raven Cycle, Ronan Lynch reveals that he can steal things from his dreams. Not always, and not anything he wants. Like most people, Ronan lacks control of his dreams, so the things he brings into reality are often random and impulsive. A raven, a pen cap, a box. Nothing of consequence, it seems. Regardless, Ronan doesn’t know why he can do this, and he doesn’t know how to control it.

This complicates things even more. Ronan and his friends find themselves in a web of people searching for the impossible, and as Henrietta gets more crowded, the less the supernatural wants to show itself. Will Gansey be able to find Glendower? Is Ronan’s power controllable? Is all of this connected? Blue and her Raven Boys will have to figure it out.
Sequels are rarely better than the original, but The Dream Thieves is. Both novels are written in the same tone and feel, but The Dream Thieves extends and elaborates on the mystery of the first novel. This novel primarily focuses on Ronan, whose angry and impulsive tendencies are finally explained. He is given a back story that explains not only his powers but also his overall behavior. While The Raven Boys was very Gansey-centric, The Dream Thieves shifts its narration primarily to Ronan. I didn’t realize it, but Ronan’s thought process is very poetic. Regardless, Maggie Stiefvater has a unique way of writing. It is so sophisticated, to a point beyond what I’ve come to expect from many young adult novels.
These books are special because of their characters and the friendships between them. While this is a supernatural thriller, the plot feels driven by very mundane human relationships and feelings. I think older teens and any adult would love this novel. The diction is very adult, and the characters are lovable in every way. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Blue Lily, Lily Blue.

I did not enjoy this book nearly as much as the Raven Boys. I found the story confusing and on the whole, found the boys much less likable. The Grey Man character was totally crazy from my perspective. I'll read the last book because I want to know how she pulls all of this together, but right now, for me, it is just a jumbled mess. ...more
