Paul Fatush wrote: Vampires are like Dracula. They CAN'T be on the sun or they will burn. WTF is wrong with Twilight...."

While I applaud your view of Twilight, I would point out that Dracula did go out in the sun. Vampires burning in the sun is a film invention (Nosferatu 1922) not something from the books.

Xenophon Hendrix Alison wrote: "...How is Dracula NOT number one?"
Dracula was high on the list, if not number one, but then it was deleted by an abusive librarian. It has since come part of the way back.

Payton: first, welcome to the internet.
Second, as someone who has an 11 year old nephew who uses far worse words, if you think that's cursing you lead a sheltered life.

message 108: by Xenophon (new)

Xenophon Hendrix Twilight has rabid fans who vote it up every list on which it can possibly fit.

How the fuck is the Twilight saga beating out Dracula?

I LOVE 'salem's Lot, but Dracula will ALWAYS be my #1 Vampire book.

Carolyn Wow, seeing as the Cullens aren't actually vampires makes this list pretty strange, but all right.

How are they not vampires?

They Sparkle.

message 115: by Prince Cassius (new)

Prince Cassius VonFruitypants The Twilight books occupy the top four spots.

The first mention of Anne Rice is sixteen books down.

Lost Souls is all the way at number 66.

Excuse me whilst I go curl up in a corner and weep softly to myself.

Helle John wrote: "Helle wrote: "Carolyn wrote: "Wow, seeing as the Cullens aren't actually vampires makes this list pretty strange, but all right."

And where does it say that vampires can't sparkle? Don't get me wrong, I think the whole sparkle thing is stupid, I just hate it when people use arguments that don't make sense like "they're not vampires". They drink the blood of living creatures in order to survive, I'm pretty sure that's the general definition of a vampire.

message 117: by Travis (new)

Travis Much as I dislike 'Twilight', they are vampires.
There are a ga-zillion types of vampires and every vampire book picks and chooses what they want to use and occasionally adds to or tweaks the idea of what vampires are/do.

message 118: by Javed (new)

Javed Hayat Since when was Twilight a vampire novel???

message 119: by Laura (new)

Laura Kyle wrote: "Twilight, are you kidding me? Where is Stephen Kings's 'Salem's Lot?"

It's up there. #9. This is a voting thing, so I'm guessing that this list is constantly changing, which means that Twilight will not forever be at the top. :)

message 120: by Richard (new)

Richard How can ANYTHING be above Dracula? Even worse, how is Twilight on the top of the list? My generation is such a disappointment.

message 121: by Laura (new)

Laura Richard wrote: "How can ANYTHING be above Dracula? Even worse, how is Twilight on the top of the list? My generation is such a disappointment."

I agree with your last statement. My peers make me want to hide in shame. Although, I suppose that I can be just as bad, so who am I to be talking? While I wouldn't vote for Twilight, I have yet to read Dracula. I have started it, and while it did fascinate me, it was also a little dry, though I need to finish reading it before I pass a final judgement on it.

message 122: by amara (new)

amara it seems that there are all the vampire books not the best ones only!!

message 123: by Jason (new)

Jason This list i ridiculous. It's title is obviously a typo and should read WORST VAMPIRE BOOKS, I mean, DRACULA is no. 33? It is THE vampire book and the best ever. Not to mention where is other groundbreaking vampire books like VARNEY the VAMPIRE and le Fanu's amazing CARMILLA.

message 124: by Kari (new)

Kari Seriously... Twilight is at the top?!?!?! I can't think of a bigger slap in the face to true vampire fans.

It is true that in some lore vampires can go out in sunlight... however... THEY... DO... NOT... SPARKLE!

message 125: by Cierra (new)

Cierra evermore is not a vampire novel its a bout alchemy

message 126: by Nap (new)

Nap GRRM is well known for the A Song Of Ice and Fire series but fortunately for me, the first novel made by GRRM that I have ever read is Fevre Dream, and buried treasure of sort since I think only a few have ever read it (even those who are familiar with the Ice and Fire series.) I've read a lot of vampire related stories like Salem's Lot, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, Bram Stoker, Carmilla, etc but none has ever WOW'ed me (in the vampire category) than Fevre Dream. A good story when told magnificently will be a hit; but a deep, intricate and mesmerizing story told by the Great storyteller GRRM will never ever fail to pull you in and keep you hanging with each word.

message 127: by Kirby (new)

Kirby the other boleyn girl? that's funny...

message 128: by Allie (new)

Allie Why in the heck is The Other Boleyn Girl on this list? Isn't it just a historical fiction novel about Mary Boleyn?

message 129: by Xenophon (last edited Mar 21, 2012 05:57PM) (new)

Xenophon Hendrix Voting for only the first book in a series leaves the Dresden Files in a lurch. A couple of the books in the series are excellent vampire novels, but most of the books in the series aren't about vampires, including the first one.

The same thing can be said about the Mercy Thompson series, really.

message 130: by Laura (last edited Mar 26, 2012 12:21PM) (new)

Laura I need to read more adult vampire books...

I'm removing ones that aren't adult and that are not #1 in a vampire series, like the list description says. If I miss any, please let me know! I haven't read most of these so I'm just looking at the ones that seem like YA and checking if they're not adult.

message 131: by Drew (new)

Drew Lot of books I need to read on this list. Can't believe Twilight made another list, what a waste of paper!!!

message 132: by Scott (new)

Scott This is hilarious...my wife and I own a used bookstore and we both love horror and vampire novels...so we get to read/check out some of the so-called "vampire" lit out there...she might not agree with me, but the whole "paranormal romance" genre and all these YA books are KILLING the genre...some of this stuff is so unbelievably bad..really...Fabio with pointy teeth and a lot of sexually confused teen angst...chick porn...eurotrash/metrosexual/androgynous/sexually confused brain candy...crack for the sexually frustrated and low of self esteem...it doesn't even fit in with what we know about human nature...god help the world if I ever became a vampire...I would be eating every 17 year old girl in sight and using their boyfriends' decapitated heads to mop up the blood...vampires should be scary...the prospect of being eaten by one should make you wet your pants, not tingle your loins...Dracula, Salems Lot, Children of Night, Interview with the Vampire, I Am Legend, Vampire$...these are vampire books...give me something hard core...

My wife and I got some Laura K. Hamilton on CD...OMG...just awful...tho they did put me right to sleep...I do have to admit that we watch Vampire Diaries...but we look upon it as a comedy...

message 133: by Loveliest Evaris (new)

Loveliest Evaris I hate how vampires are all the rage.. it's like being emo; no one will take you seriously if you write a 'SUPER ULTRA NEW look on vampires'! Everyone's trying to get their foot in the door, and at this point I want to read of a handsome -OLD- suave vampire like Dracula, none of these teenager vampires... they're all -pardon my French- pussies compared to the Lord of Darkness (no not Ozzy Osbourne, he's the Prince of Darkness)

Lol. Rage over Twilight is understandable. But this is dedication! :)

message 135: by Xenophon (new)

Xenophon Hendrix Laurell K. Hamilton is a sad case. The first several Anita Blake books are fun adventure fiction, but then Ms. Hamilton decided she was going to start writing long-winded pornography.

message 136: by Drew (new)

Drew Here's the thing, the title of the list is BEST ADULT VAMPIRE BOOKS. That being the case, it should automatically eliminate the Twilight series being that it is YA fiction. Obviously adults can read the series but it doesn't belong in this list.

message 137: by Drew (new)

It's The Traveling Vampire Show, not Circus, and yes it should definitely be here.

The Keep was fantastic!

I still haven't read The Thirst yet but it is in my TBR pile.

yeah, I just realized that it has been changed up quite a bit, good deal.

message 140: by Fatin (new)

Fatin Has every YA writer and their mother written a book about vampires?! I miss the good ol' days when vampires were terrifying and they actually had some things to avoid! (The sun) what's there to stop everybody from being a vampire if they aren't giving anything up to be one? I always thought it was hauntingly beautiful that vampires had give up the day to be immortal. And while yes, sexy monsters are fun and all, do not forget they're monsters! DON'T forget the scary part! Jeez.

Because there are vampires in the books, that's why. No offense but...duh.

message 142: by Madeleine (new)

Madeleine Richards I am always surprised by some of the novels that get added to list without the content asked for. That said, I have to admit if someone lists a book that does not fit the catagory but is one of my favorites I can't help but vote for it anyway! Go figure.

message 143: by Edrillan (vampire junkie) (last edited Nov 20, 2012 04:03AM) (new)

Edrillan (vampire junkie) i really dont know why you hate Twilight guys but i guess i cant blame you its your opinion anyway and besides. i was actually able to watch the movie first before i read the book and i instantly fell in love with Robert Pattinson (what can i di?im just a teenager who has her puppy dog eyes on him) so sometimes i wonder about what will my reaction be if i read the book first befote watching it? maybe I'll get bored and dump it at the bottom of the sea? or i dont know get crazy about it?

But anyway i'm still happy i got to know about the twilight saga
Because Breaking Dawn part 2 the movie ROCKS!!!

It's because vampires are supposed to be scary and there is nothing scary about Twilight. When I imagine a vampire, it doesn't sparkle hon.

message 148: by Jack (new)

Jack Hi everyone,

I have created a new group called Goodreads All Sorts and I'd love for people to join it or just even just give it a look. It's a group that discusses anything and everything. There will be monthly group reads, movies, and music. There is a folder for everything you could think of. I'd really like if people could spread the word because I'd love for the group to be a success. Here is the link to the group:

http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/9...

Thanks very much,
Jack :-)

message 149: by Amy (new)

Amy This list doesn't seem to hold true to it's title, Vampire Books for Adults. Twilight is a teenage love story, some of the others are romance, which I enjoy.
However, I am looking for some great tales that are Vampire-themed but unique, and that lean more toward the gothic/horror genre. Any recommendations?

I've written vampire romance, but am currently in process of writing a series that I hope fits the category of Adult Vampire Reads while being suitable for young adults, excluding teens.

message 150: by Amanda-Lee (new)

Amanda-Lee (StoryWings) Why is Twilight and Vamp Academy even on this list?

They're marketed towards teens not adults

I love Vampire Academy...but its YA
