Melissa I see many young adult books on this list... I thought these were supposed to be books for grownups, not high school kids...

Melissa wrote: "I see many young adult books on this list... I thought these were supposed to be books for grownups, not high school kids..."It is. Sadly people can add to most any list, or the original author wasn't thinking. I've seen lists for books-to-movie translations that include Novelizations. It's really screwy.

Therealbadkitty Vampire Academy,Twilight,Vampire Kisses,Anathema,Glass House,Night World,Paranormalcy,Thirsty and Bloodlines are YA not adult.

message 154: by Therealbadkitty (new)

Therealbadkitty Fallen definitely has no place being on the list because
1.)It isn't for adults,definitely more for teenagers
2.)There are no vampires in this series.

message 155: by Therealbadkitty (new)

Therealbadkitty Actually a lot of the books on here are YA.
Oh and I found two more non vampire books on this list that don't belong. Wake and The Hunger Games.

Give Underwood & Flinch by Mike Bennett a try it puts a totally different spin on the whole vampire thing. Vampire novels were never really my thing but I had heard good things about these books and wasn't disappointed.

People watch tv .not books . That why the list is the way it is

Sexy Vampires are over used. That's why I wrote my books, so you can read about the old school blood thirsty ones and the men and women that hunt them. Nothing better than chopping the heads off of some monsters to make you forget about the sparkly, sexy ones.

message 159: by Summer (new)

Summer Kauffman That's what diversity is all about people . Just because u like something doesn't mean someone else cannot like it . While I liked reading the twilight series , watching the movie was a big disappointment . I don't think the characters fit the book . And I agree that Dracula should b first , but there's nothing wrong with looking at things in a different light . That's what choice is all about . Choice is a good thing ! Oh and if u want tips on a couple good reads , try the so okie stackhouse novels by charlaine Harris or jasemine galenorns books or Richele mead . U might like :)

Yes, and yet the admins removed my book once it hit the Top 20 and that is a very dark and brutal vampire novel. This list is no doubt controlled by representatives of the publishing houses responsible for the titles you mention.

That may not have been Admin. It could have been a Librarian.

message 162: by Shane (new)

Shane O'Neill Either way, it greatly diminishes the credibility of this list.

message 163: by Xenophon (new)

Xenophon Hendrix This list has been ill used over the years. For one, it didn't originally say "adult" vampire novels. Changing the description in mid stream strikes me as being unfair play. Two, some librarians have abused their privileges on this list by promoting their favorites, deleting what they don't like, and trying to impose their own ideas about order.

Shane wrote: "Either way, it greatly diminishes the credibility of this list."
The fact that anyone can add any crap to any list on Goodreads diminishes the list. If I wanted to make a list on here for my 10 favorite vampire novels, any jackass could come in and add Twilight. You, however, seem bitter because YOUR novel was taken off. Well guess what! You can put it back on, though that, too, would diminish the list.

message 165: by Hadessephy (new)

Hadessephy Proud to say I've been a vampire novel fan since I was eight years old. It started with Bunnicula and just never ended. I am grateful for Twilight for renewing the vampire interest. Not that it ever went away but since then I have had so many fun books to read.

message 166: by Mark (new)

Mark Goodlander I love these lists because they give me a chance to try some new material this recommended by others that like the same things. I also find it confusing at times that the books I love rarely get as much love as I think they deserve and some that I think suck to high heaven are ranked rather high. I guess it is always a case of to each their own. I happen to love the necroscope series. I don’t want my vampires to be pretty boys that everyone wants to love. I think the very sight of them should send people running. I’ve been re-reading the Rice mush because I saw Tom Cruise the other day on a rerun just destroying Lestat and had to get it out of my head. It didn’t register with me last time just how loving all her vampires were. I’m not sure I like as much this time around.

I love reading anything paranormal for the fact of the different tastes and ideas but I do like the more scary and horror sense of the books

i totally agree!!!

message 169: by Molly (new)

Molly Rose I totally agree the Twilight series is too overated and should definitely not be up there. Where's Vampire Acadamy???? That's by far the best one!!!!

message 170: by Noura (new)

Noura Twilight best book on Vampires

message 171: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Love the voting for books for they always bring about some new novels for me to read!

message 172: by Ian (new)

Ian Bell You could try 'LONDON UNDERGROUND' (author: Ian Bell) if you prefer adult vampire novels, and if you enjoy it you could move on to 'THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOOD' which is the sequel.

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude This list is titled

"Best Adult Vampire Books

The best of vampire fiction that is not marketed for young adults."

So, how is Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia a vampire book? It's no. 503 on this list as of todays date (and btw one of my top 20 reads of the last couple of years).

Also, the list is titled BEST... how many people have voted just for those that they consider the best as opposed to those that they just enjoyed reading? Such a shame as this is potentially an excellent list but has been watered down by many of the inclusions.

message 175: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Harbour Are there any GOOD vampire lists on Goodreads? As in, not full of garbage romance like this list is full of? It's useless, absolutely useless, for finding a good book in this horror sub-genre. Shame on you list creator for not calling it like it is: Best Adult ROMANCE Vampire Books (With A Few Classics Thrown In).

People can add any book they choose. It may not have anything to do with the creator.

Sud666 Kirsten wrote: "Crystal wrote: "OH. MY. GOD. I seriously CANNOT believe that Twilight is on the top of this list. I know it's a major cultural phenomenon, especially among young teenage readers, but IMO it is most..."

Well Kristen, it can be summed up nicely by the following post from an ACTUAL Twilight fan:
"U can sit there and say twilight is this and that but when it comes down to it well there is a reason while it is at the top of the list so get over it!! And for those complaining about them sparkling I mean really!!... unless u no a real vampire dam live vampire (which I'm pretty sure u dont) then don't act like u no how they r suppose to b! Vampires vary from book to book, humans rnt all the same either some might have 9 or 11 fingers instead of 10 that doesn't make them any less human now does it!? "

I'm not really sure that even counts as English. Sadly, in this 140 characters or less Tweet world that most teens live in, this is acceptable. I doubt that have the taste or intellect to read a good classic like Dracula or even Salem's Lot. They are borderline imbeciles. It's harsh, I realize, but true.

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude The rockabilly werewolf from Mars wrote: "Why can't all these romance writing squares stop stealing our concepts? Vampires belong to horror, always have and always will (same goes for werewolves). Also, get better cover artists. Every single romance novel looks exactly the same. I have no clue how you people can tell them apart. If I read romance, I would probably be thoroughly irritated trying to find a specific one. This is one of the many reasons I don't read romance. ."

Oh wow, so much animosity in a few short sentences.

Firstly, vampires and werewolves and indeed any other character types 'belong' to whomever want to write and read about them. If you don't want to read about them in anything other than horror, that's your choice.

Secondly, I doubt that you have seen every single romance cover ever created so a sweeping statement that 'they all look exactly the same' is not just ridiculous but also wrong. Plus, all genres, including horror have 'themes' or trends at various times that make the covers somewhat similar so how is that any different?

Lastly, I'm glad at least that you don't waste your time reading books that don't appeal, perhaps also save more time by not talking smack about them!

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude The rockabilly werewolf from Mars wrote: "What even is the appeal of romance, anyway? I still haven't figured it out. They all seem so similar, plotwise; surely people get tired of them quickly."

The same can be said for most genres of fiction (and not just in respect of books either). But again, it is wrong. Romance, like most genres, has various sub-genres and an unlimited number of tropes and these things makes many many books different from others... in all genres.

message 182: by kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude (last edited Oct 08, 2019 01:43PM) (new)

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude The rockabilly werewolf from Mars wrote: "Romance is inherently limited, in that it requires there to be a love story as the driving force of the plot; and I highly doubt that there are an unlimited number of love stories. Seeing that I co..."

You clearly have a very biased opinion against a genre that you know very little about but that is your right so I am not trying to change your mind in any way. Your level of animosity towards it is puzzling though given you say you have little interest in love stories as a subject matter. I don't care much for certain genres, including horror but would never presume to tell readers of horror books about the scope of their content or indeed anything else, it's not worth my time.

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude The rockabilly werewolf from Mars wrote: "None of this has yet explained why people like romance, or why they have such dreadful covers."

No one should have to explain their preferences to you but the internet, including GR, is a hive of information for you to educate yourself on various subjects, including why the romance genre is so well-loved.

Also, you should be able to accept that we all have different tastes without disparaging what someone else likes.

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude The rockabilly werewolf from Mars wrote: "I don't want romance-related things in my search history."

And it is completely your choice to remain ignorant on this or any other topic so as not to pollute your search history.

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude The rockabilly werewolf from Mars wrote: "Still evading questions. If you don't know why, why not just admit it instead of making superficial comments that are irrelevant to the main point. I'm not trying to start arguments, you know; I'm ..."

I'm not evading anything, but I am one person and you will (as you already have) found fault with my singular opinion. Also, perhaps if you actually asked in an openly curious way rather than threw around argumentative statements and opinions as with your starting post, you may find that open dialogue follows.

However, I stand by my previous statement that the internet, including GR is a great source of information and if you really are curious, then go do some research; you could start with any one of the various romance groups on this site so you are getting POV's from a number of people not just one.

Go on, I dare you to broaden your horizons and sully your serach history...

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude The rockabilly werewolf from Mars wrote: "Why would I join a romance group if I don't read romance? How do you think they would respond if I just walked in and asked "yes, I am wondering why romance covers look so ugly"? I feel that this s..."

Such willful ignorance. Good luck with getting your very rude questions answered.

Over and out from me.
