Guild Hunter series, Vampire Academy, Mercy Thompson and Black Dagger Brotherhood is the best paranormal series. Twilight cannot compare to this as it should not even fall into this category. Read it quite liked it but not enough.

message 60: by Amyiw (last edited Dec 02, 2011 08:01PM) (new)

Amyiw OK, a "Hunger Like No Other", is the first Immortals After Dark book, "The Warlord Wants Forever" was a novella in "Playing Easy to Get". Many readers don't even know about the novella so you get a poor representation of votes for Immortals After Dark by using the "The Warlord Wants Forever" short ebook that was release separately, in 2011, after the series became popular as the first IAD story. On any other PNR list A Hunger Like No Other would be at the top 10, or 20 at least. Here it is number 78? Here is the top 100 PNR list. :-(
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/13...

Immortals After Dark is #7 there.
It is in my top 5(maybe 3) and I really cannot pick a favorite, they are all so good.

You should use the first book, not novella. You do use the first "book" for the Alpha & Omega series of Patricia Briggs, "Cry Wolf" and not the novella "Alpha & Omega" the novella in "On The Prowl" which was the fist story. Why? At least that novella is better known and is essential to the first book. "The Warlord Wants Forever" is not. I read it way after the first 3 books.

message 61: by Erika (new)

Erika My top choices would be J.R Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series and Karen Moning's Fever series!

message 62: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Lloyd I have so many favorites that I do not think that I would be able to name them all. LOL.... But to name a few: Christine Feehan, "Carpathian Novels" Jeaniene Frost "Night Huntress" Amanda Ashley "My Night" Kresley Cole "Immortals after dark" Maggie Shayne " Wings of the Night" Oh and my favorite is Kate Douglas "Wolf Tales" and "Sexy Beast" Kate just gives all in this series. Well I could go on and on, but I would be here all night LOL.... Try some of these, and please feel free to let me know about your favorites. There is so much I have not yet read.

message 63: by Jan (new)

Jan Amyiw: I see your point, but the thing is that it's listed as the first primary work both on GR as on Coles website, and not as a non necessary novella (as your example of Alpha and Omega). So the librarian who deleted it (and there's a big chance that was me), simply followed the rules of the list and deleted the 2nd book of the series.

To give you an idea what cleaning up this list is like: Open every book in a new tab (I do it by 10 at a time). Check if it's part of a series. Check if there's at least 3 books in the series, if not check if all books that should be in the series are in the series (add them to it if not), check if it's the first in the series. Delete if it doesn't fit with the rules.

Rinse and Repeat until you've checked every book on the list.

It's a lot of work (and very time-consuming), and it has to be done frequently, because people keep voting for entire series or stand alone novels instead of first books of series.

If we have to start checking if the fanbase considers the first book as the actual first book, maintaining this list becomes entirely impossible.

message 64: by Lexie (new)

Lexie I don't understand why everyone loves the black dagger series...I can't stand her writing.

message 65: by Lizt (new)

Lizt I love the entire JR Ward's BDB series. Can't wait to see what the Warden has planned for Thor.

message 66: by Gigi (new)

Gigi Why is Hunger Games on here? That's kind of insulting.

message 67: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Lloyd I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood series!!! And the next book Lover Reborn (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #10) by J.R. Ward comes out on March 27th and I can not wait.

I see what you mean, and appreciate the list and work just the same. It is too bad they don't have a way to list by series instead of one book. When you go to the authors page on the right lower, they have the series list of the author with the book covers; why can't we do that. :-( It would completely solve the problem.

message 69: by Cherryl (new)

Cherryl My personal favorites are Larissa Ione, Nalini Singh, J.R. Ward and Sherrilyn Kenyon!

message 70: by Clary (new)

Clary Fray i recomend anything by cassanda claire. best author ever!!!!!!

message 71: by Jess (new)

Jess The best series on here is Fallen Saga and why is The Hunger Games on here? I know it's a good book and all but it doesn't deserve to be on this list.

Lynette Carson Thanks been.meaning to see if my.library has these.books

message 75: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Cutter I agree, I do think it should have been separated.

Ashley wrote: "Whoa whoa! I don't know about Twilight being up first, but I think this list should've been separated into young adults and adults."

message 76: by Nora (new)

Nora Why is The Hunger Games on this list? There is nothing paranormal about it and no romance!

message 77: by Serena (new)

Serena I love the Vampire Academy series. Its written in a way that allows it to connect with different audiences. Women and teens alike know how Rose feels and what she is going through. Much less melodramatic than Twilight. The Bloodlines spinoff series is also great. Richelle Mead is a very visual writer and it gives these books depth that I think many paranormal romance novels lack these days.

message 78: by Melanie (last edited Jul 12, 2012 07:54PM) (new)

Melanie I think Evernight and Shiver should be higher up, I agree with Ashley too.

message 86: by Nichole (new)

Nichole looking for some feedback on Christine Feehan and Linsay Sands - I love Gena Showalter, Karen Marie Moning, Jeaniene Frost, Kresley Cole, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kerrelyn Sparks, Terry Spear, and J R Ward - however, I have read most of their books and am looking to branch out some more while I wait for new books from my favorite authors

Amyiw Nichole wrote: "looking for some feedback on Christine Feehan and Linsay Sands - I love Gena Showalter, Karen Marie Moning, Jeaniene Frost, Kresley Cole, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kerrelyn Sparks, Terry Spear, and J R War..."

If you like Kerrelyn Sparks, you'll probably like Lynsay Sands too. It is light and fun vampire romance, some very laugh out loud funny.

Christine Feehan I would compare more to Maggie Shane but better. To me it is old style, overbearing(controlling), brooding vampires/immortals males that require a mate to not get pulled into the evil side after losing their feelings/emotions/colors. The world is great but the stories frequently are repetitive with not much difference and the sex cookie cutter. I couldn't tell the difference from one book to another frequently. Still the world is great and pulls me back every once in a while. I only have 5 books to complete the series. It is not comparable to Cole, Frost, Showalter, Kenyon, Sparks, or Ward. I've read through all of those. It is more a romance (much less about plot and more about the character's relationship) and doesn't usually happen in the urban environment. I've never read Spear. Read 4 of the Highlanders and Darkfever of Moning.

It looks like you like the paranormal romance and some comedy
Psy-Changelings of Nalini Singh (Guild Hunters are good too but they start out less PNR and more UF)
Demonica/Lord of Deliverance of Larissa Ione
heavy on the romance with great plot going on, similar to Cole and Frost.
Also Ilona Andrews' Edge series

For comedy
Lynsay Sands Argeneau's are good also
Shelly Laurenston (a.k.a. G.A. Aiken, her dragons are great fun) Mangus Pack and Pride series
Kathy Love

If you want great Urban Fantasy, light on the romance but great character interaction.
Patricia Briggs', Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega series
Ilona Andrews', Kate Daniels series

and no romance, pure UF (well at least into book 4)
Iron Druid of Kevin Hearne, very fun. Lot's of scifi references.

My top 5 writers of paranormal
Frost, Cole, Singh, Briggs, and Andrews

I REALLY love the others you have mentioned too but only can have so many favorites. I have read through all them but Spear and Moning. Oh, darn and I was thinking of adding Kevin Hearne to the list. Still might not be your cup o' tea.

message 88: by Nichole (new)

Nichole I just finished Spear's two series and am reading through Moning's highlander series now (sexy, beefy men in kilts - whats not to like) - I will have to check out a few of the others you suggested though, thanks

message 89: by Jack (new)

Jack Hi everyone,

I have created a new group called Goodreads All Sorts and I'd love for people to join it or just even just give it a look. It's a group that discusses anything and everything. There will be monthly group reads, movies, and music. There is a folder for everything you could think of. I'd really like if people could spread the word because I'd love for the group to be a success. Here is the link to the group:

Thanks very much,
Jack :-)

message 92: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Whitford This list is Paranormal Romance, Not Urban Fantasy or Dystopian right?

message 93: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Whitford Eragon and Harry Potter are paranormal romance? Really? There is nothing paranormal about the 50 Shades series!

message 94: by Amy (new)

Amy I like the Jolie Wilkins series by H.P. Mallory.

message 95: by Sheera (new)

Sheera I'm going to have to make it a plan of mine to read Lynsay Sands' series ... AND I'm going to repeat what's been said by MANY-These are NOT PNR: Harry Potter, 50 Shades & that BORING dystopian book (I don't remember the name but LOTS of ppl b4 me mention it)

message 96: by Sheera (new)

Sheera Sheera wrote: "that BORING dystopian book..."

I remember the name!!! Hunger Games

Erin (Historical Fiction Reader) Literally deleted half this list as the titles clearly violated the first book rule.

Also cleared out a handful of non-applicable titles such as Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything, Angels & Demons, and Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

Finally started researching some of the series to make sure they met the three title rule. Deleted several titles for not meeting that qualification.

List isn't perfect but it is much better than it was.

message 98: by Sf (new)
