It's my favorite series so far, and none of the other books I've ever read kept me reading until 4 in the morning. I read them in between first and second grade, and they're still my favorite. I've read the series 12 and going on 13 times now :)

HARRY POTTER!!!

message 1154: by Bensch (new)

Bensch People who like Twilight are fine. I have nothing against Stephanie Meyer fans. I just can't believe that it apparently has more fans than Harry Potter, considering the basic, unoriginal, plot and characters, and Harry Potter's layered, complex plot and characters.

Lea Yeah, I don't think the Twilight books/movies were any good, but it is just a matter of opinion.

Amy Christina wrote: "I can't believe Twilight has more votes than Harry Potter. That is just wrong."

I totally agree, I can't believe it. No offense. I like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series way better than the Twilight Saga.
I have to say that the Twilight Saga is pretty good in the first couple of books, but when the last couple of books came out, I don't think it was as good.
Well anyways, HARRY POTTER RULES~

message 1162: by Lea (new)

Lea Harry Potter rules . . . "Always"

I agree. Twilight and many others are really great, but Harry Potter is for me, way better than the others. ONLY personal opinion but, for me Harry Potter inspired me into enjoying to read. I hope more and more people actually enjoy it like we do, because it is not just a series of fictional stories, but something that can inspire children to think.

lemons don't have I.Q. s and it is impossible for a human to have an I.Q. of Zero. Just saying.

Tanz the Fluorescent Adolescent I've read both the Twilight saga and Harry Potter at the age of ten-clearly the best year of my life- and I've got to say the impact HP had on my life is far more significant, although I loved Twilight when I initially read it. HP's intricate story is still better than or equal to anything I have EVER read. I'll always have a soft spot for Twilight but, if I reread it, I'd probably laugh at the idiotic misogyny in the series. I think there are issues of under appreciation of anything different in the YA genre. A lot of the more popular books are only popular because they follow the path laid out for them by series like HP and Twilight. There also seems to only be two genres in YA: realistic romance and fantasy romance. There is hardly any popular YA without the main character ending up in a straight relationship by the novel's/series' end.

A lot of these books aren't young adult. Here are some that I think should be taken off the list for that reason:

Children:

The Lightning Theif(and the rest of the percy jackson series)

Anne of Green Gables
The Phantom Tollbooth
Princess Academy(and series)
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
Among the Hidden
James and the Giant Peach
The Giving Tree
Wonder
Diary of a Wimpy Kid(and series)
Chronicles of Narnia
The Mysterious Benedict Society(and series)
Esperanza Rising
Harriet the Spy
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing
Matilda
The Mouse and the Motorcycle(Ralf series)
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales
Where the Wild Things Are
Winnie-the-Pooh
The Penderwicks(series)
The Whipping Boy
Out of My Mind
A Single Shard
Bunnicula
Warriors Series
Goodnight Moon
Chains
Moon Over Manifest
A Light in the Attic
The Mother-Daughter Book Club(series)

Adult:

To Kill a Mockingbird
Pride and Prejudice
A little Princess
Howl's Moving Castle
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Animal Farm
The Great Gatsby
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Help

And those are just ones that I've read in the first ten pages!(because I'm too lazy to go further with this) I'm sure there are many more.

I agree, there are a lot of really peculiar choices on this list - makes you wonder if the compilers know what 'young adult' means.

Lucy Loves Books Tucker wrote: "A lot of these books aren't young adult."

You Know YA books don't always have to be YA books. It only counts if you enjoy them. Books aren't about the age of the readers. The existence of books is all about enjoying what you read. Probably the person who made the YA book list liked those books even if they are childrens literature.

Fantz Lolabella wrote: "i like harry potter a lot and i am obsessed with the movies and all but I don't like the books as much as the movies. i don't know why this is."
Books are always better than accordingly adapted movies just except very few examples like 'the godfather' which movies' quality are just as good as the paper one, almost all others are not(maybe 2001 a space odyssey do too), first the book should be fantastic enough then it could attract the attention of the movie producers, and more in detail, more gradually in scenario progression also give the books more attractiveness.

I removed A court ofmist and fury because almost 1200 people added it to their new adult shelves and because most people care about content. Very few care who is publishing. I'm here to serve the readers who want to know if the content of a book is really young adult. The content isn't young adult at all.

message 1178: by Shaylene (new)

Shaylene I grew up reading the Percy Jackson series ever since I was young and my teacher started reading it to us. I am so grateful to her that she introduced me to the series because it became my favourite of all time! I got immersed in the mythology and learned so much about Greek myth. I especially loved Rick Riordan's twist on the myths and quirky humour to put a spin on things.

message 1179: by Patrick (new)

I agree with you, Shwetika. There are hundreds of books better written. I think the hype did it for J K, and she chose wizards - which was ripe for plucking.

message 1190: by Mitchell (new)

Mitchell Friedman Leia wrote: "Doesn't Harry Potter technically count as children's book and not YA?"

On goodreads 15,616 people have shelved book one as young adult.
3.938 have shelved book one as children.
If this were my list, that would be good enough to have it be on a list for young adult AND a list for children.

message 1193: by Lucianne (new)

Lucianne I've just completed reading a novel called 'Horn-Horn' by A. D. T. McLellan and it was honestly one of the most emotionally confusing experiences of my life. Such intense humour mixed with incredibly scary imagery, while intertwined in a high school with mysteries abounding... Couldn't recommend enough. Obsessed.

message 1194: by Gail (new)

Gail HORN-HORN by A. D. T. McLellan.

My best friend gave me her copy on a very tight loan and I don't think I've ever liked a book so much.
