message 357: by Alli (new)

Alli YAY! Yup, Harry Potter is WAY better than the Twilight series, go Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling!

message 358: by Alli (new)

Alli though, if you like twilight try the Nightshade series

message 359: by Emily (new)

Emily Alli wrote: "though, if you like twilight try the Nightshade series"

I found the Twilight books way better than the movies. (well, I haven't watched Breaking Dawn yet, so i cant comment on that movie) And I have read the Nightshade Series, they are pretty amazing, I have to agree!

Emily Emily wrote: "SHIVER,LINGER,FOREVER THREE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ IN MY LIFE"

I loved Shiver, and Forever. But I found Linger a bit boring after a while.

message 361: by Alli (new)

Alli Wait a minute, were you guys talking about the Hunger Games? They're awesome, and I can't wait for the movie. I just finished watching Kyra's trailer, and it was awesome.

Emily Alli wrote: "Wait a minute, were you guys talking about the Hunger Games? They're awesome, and I can't wait for the movie. I just finished watching Kyra's trailer, and it was awesome."

Actually we were talking about a variety of books, but yeah, the Hunger Games were one of them. And I agree with you, I love the Hunger Games too! :)

message 363: by Alli (new)

Alli Yeah, we were talking about the Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Twilight and SHIVER, LINGER AND FOREVER. Oh, and Nightshade, but... yeah. Have any of you read the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan? IT'S SO AWESOME, you have to read it. I like reread the whole series like, a million times. Literally.

Dude, that Percy Jackson & the Olympians is one of the BEST series ever written! It is right up there with The Hunger Games for me, it's just for a younger age level, and with more humor.

OH YEAH! I forgot about that series. The movie was pretty good too, surprisely. Cause, no offense, but the TWILIGHT books were good, but the MOVIES SUCKED! they were tottaly different......

message 366: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Harry Potter all the way!!!! Twilight was good, but nothing compares to HP!

message 367: by Emily (new)

Emily YES! I LOVE HP! I almost started crying when the series ended. :(

message 368: by Shiferaw (new)

Shiferaw T.leta Dear Goodreads,

Ur new friend,S.T.Leta

message 369: by Kerra (new)

Kerra Having Twilight at #4 totally discredits this list.

message 370: by Khadija (new)

Khadija Khan i think all the books mentioned here are amazing and i have read most of them.Harry potter is the best of all i also like Anna of green gables and little women coz both of them are written in old times and are absolutely amazing specially if you read them in a short and illustrated form.

message 371: by Khadija (new)

Khadija Khan i have read almost all the 19th century classics now i am searching for modern teenager books

message 372: by Candycloud (new)

Candycloud smile.

message 373: by Shaoyi (new)

Shaoyi Harry Potter is much better than Twilight. Twilight may have a plot, but not much else. It is also the most predictable book of all time.

message 374: by Emily (new)

Emily LOVED HARRY POTTER, STILL DO!

message 375: by [deleted user] (new)

A couple of problems with the YA genre are age grouping (what is cutting edge for 17 may be too mature for 13 (see comments above about appropriateness)), and the idiotic idea held by publishers that the lead characters cannot be more than 2 years older than the target readers. I think this really sells young readers short. I read The Lord of the Rings when I was 14, and didn't think "Gosh, Frodo is 34, he's too old to interest me." So, if the lead characters are 20 and 19, but this is first love, are they too old? If not, read "The Ballad of Young Tam Lin." Great writing, love, sensuality (without graphic sex), jeopardy, humor, and some moments of deep introspection. You've gotta read this one (unless you hate fantasy romance.)

Oh my gosh that's so funny i can't say I 100 percent agree but it's true Twilight is not the best book in the world reason its on the list in the first place is due to too much over exaggeration and publicity. Just because its a big hit movie. The Story plot okay but the characters are so dramatic and the theme of forbidden love mixed with the over use of vampires well it does cut it for me.

Twilight is going down!

message 380: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to re-plug The Ballad of Young Tam Lin. All the people who hate Twilight, with good reason, but still enjoy fantasy romance, you should love this one. Excellent writing, convincing characters, novel twists, and some opportunity for deep thinking. Preview the first 3 chapters on Kindle ("look inside"), or buy it at https://www.createspace.com/3661637.

message 385: by Traci (new)

Traci Twilight All the way. Harry Potter bored me to death after a while that I couldn't even stand to look at the page. I've read the Twilight Series 3 times, and I still am intrigued by Stephanie Meyer. J.K. Rowling is an excellent author. But sometimes..to much is TOO MUCH!

Sonia Traci wrote: "Twilight All the way. Harry Potter bored me to death after a while that I couldn't even stand to look at the page. I've read the Twilight Series 3 times, and I still am intrigued by Stephanie Meyer..."

Yeah! I agree with you!!! I tried reading Harry Potter but I couldn't... I just couldn't. I mean I like the movies and I have nothing against Harry Potter the books or J.K Rowling herself... It's just, I couldn't read the books because they really did bore me. And I really do like Twilight. It's awesome! I've read Stephenie's books many times and I'm still in love with them!! :)

message 387: by [deleted user] (new)

My wife (author Patricia Leslie) and I read to each other before bed, and we got into the Harry Potters around book 4, when we didn't want to wait another year+ for the next film. We enjoyed the latter books (except Deathly Hallows, which dragged for us), but have no desire to go back to the beginning. Might be interesting to start in the middle, to better appreciate Rowling's excellent take on the pains of adolescence.

message 388: by Emma (new)

Emma I think the Infernal Devices needs to be on this list!

message 389: by o_oMiyana o_o (new)

o_oMiyana o_o I like Harry Potter and Twilight:)

message 390: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn I'm very glad that The Hobbit is quite high up on the list, as it's one of my favourite books. In fact, I have a pocket edition right in front of me! I'm surprised the Twilight books are high up, but only because I've heard so much negative criticism. It's great that Harry Potter and the Percy Jackson series are there, though. Brilliant books, the lot of them.

message 391: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Eshleman-Robles Jane Eyre and The Lorax? We need to define Young Adults before we go willy nilly making a list like this.

message 392: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, The Lorax manages the "young" quite well, but I'd say it's about a decade off the "adult." Ryan, I totally agree. However, like American politics, I don't see any way to force people to stick to the issues - it's always going to have elements of "but I LOVE this" involved, even if the genre is totally off.

message 393: by Makenzie (new)

Makenzie I love the hunger games series Read them all in 3 months

message 394: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie Câmara Manoel I haven't heard of half of the books on the list

message 395: by [deleted user] (new)

It's a more diverse list than one might have expected. Sure, the fan-based series are all there, but there is also a nice mix of many genres and subjects.

message 398: by Venessa (new)

Venessa Wow, I just read 9 pages of comments saying I love Twilight or I love Harry Potter. Why are you guys arguing over this? People have different opinions, they always will.

message 399: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 28, 2012 03:15PM) (new)

Re Vanessa, the struggle to have the last word never ends. I'm impressed that there are ONLY 9 pages of "I'm right!" "NO, I'M right." However, we could all let others' opinions stand for our own, and move on. There must be other books to talk about.

message 400: by Luna (new)

Luna Alexandre Haha house of night series, really? LOL. Ok if you like the book(s} than that's your choice and all that but I tried to read the first book and I honestly found it even more horrible than twilight. But I guess I am just not that in to the whole vampire thing. But it's also just the way these books are written. i know my grammar kinda sucks but English isn't my native or even second language. But if you like the books, could you please tell my why; To all the other ppl out there I would appreciate some good vampire book titles. I mean if you want to, you don't have to, but it would be nice.
