Yes indeedy it does, and many of us have tried. The link is broken, and so until GR staff decide to repair it--or maybe I should say unless they do--we humble volunteers that monitor and correct problems with the list are helpless. This is not something that can be done manually; either the system lets us, or it doesn't.

If this frustrates you, go to the librarians' page and mention it, including the name of the list. Squeaky wheels and all that. I have done it to no good result, but multiple users may have more success.

Ben Robertson How are people saying Wilde, Shakespeare & Dickens don't belong here? They are timeless classics.

The title of this list is "Best Books of the 20th Century" ...

K D Too many duplicates, too old, too new, poetry?, plays? What century are we in? Interesting though.

Donna Davis K D wrote: "Too many duplicates, too old, too new, poetry?, plays? What century are we in? Interesting though."

A book of poetry is still a book, and is legitimately placed. However, if you see titles that were published originally before or after the 1900s, please make a note of the titles along with an item# or page # for each and I will yank them.

Erin To Kill a Mockingbird is in both 1st and 10th place (two different editions) and should be combined.

We are still waiting for GR staff to fix the broken duplicate link. The problem can be corrected once it's done, and until then, there's not much to do but wait. Or vote on other lists. I understand it is in the pipeline, so sooner or later it will get taken care of.

message 458: by Erin (new)

Erin Both #1 and #10 are To Kill a Mockingbird.

Erin Lots of duplicates on this list!
Both #76 and #133 are Rebecca.
Both #8 and #16 are The Catcher in the Rye.

Yeah well, the duplicate check for librarians still isn't working.

message 461: by Erin (new)

Erin Ah, that’s a shame! There are so many duplicates toward the end of this list, it would be extensively shortened just by fixing that!

message 462: by Erin (new)

Erin #4606 is Poems by Emily Dickinson, which was published in the 19th century.

How is it that people not only add these books to the list but comment their surprise that Shakespeare, Dickens and others are “missing” from a list of books of the 20th century?! Can’t you read?! 😂😂😂

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Erin wrote: "#4606 is Poems by Emily Dickinson, which was published in the 19th century.

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) @Manolo
Not only leave a number but also a title of the book, as books/titles tend to change numbers. When you leave title and number in the comment section, it makes it a lot easier for a librarian to find, while now it is (almost) impossible.

The duplicate check isn't working at the moment, so there is nothing I or any other librarian can do about the duplicates you mentioned. (I've left a comment in the Goodreads Feedback group about the duplicate check not working, but it may take a while before it gets fixed).

I've removed Song of Myself, as it was first published in the 19th century.

You went to a lot of work to document these, but I am sorry to say this is not a job that can be done manually. We have to wait for the duplicate link to be repaired. Admin knows that it's broken and it's in the queue, and until then duplicates will remain right where they are. (And yes, this frustrates me too.) We volunteers do not have the authority to remove duplicate entries because--as you noted--doing so also removes votes. Whether to vote on a list where the duplicates cannot be resolved yet is a judgment call.

I am not prepared to chase the hair-splitters, such as 1900 copyrights and the Ramona books, which were first written and published in the mid-20th century but are featured here in a new--and thus newly copyrighted--format. I am deleting those that have a location noted (thank you) and that are clearly outside the list's description, and in at least one case almost certainly author spam to boot. See separate note for those deleted.

Chris Deliso OK, obviously taste in literature is a very subjective thing, I wish this was separated by genre in some way. And mass sales do not make for great writing (Harry Potter, I'm looking at you). So here are my obviously subjective additions to the above list, in no particular order.

-Robert Musil, The Man Without Qualities
-William Faulkner, Light in August
-Borges, Ficciones (short stories category)
-Hemingway, A Moveable Feast (memoir category)

And (just to mess with ya'all) any early Hardy Boys (detective stories for kids). That 'Franklin W. Dixon' was epic (though man did he get stiffed on the proceeds of a series still running, 100 years on).

If you want to add a book, you have to do it yourself. If you aren't sure how to do that, scroll back to message 425.

And for what it's worth, I don't like Harry Potter either; but as a teacher, I saw kids that loved it and that otherwise wouldn't read during times they could choose something else to do, so I begrudgingly admit its value...however inflated.

And so shall it always be, because the duplicate check link is broken, and we are no longer supposed to report these. We also aren't supposed to remove the second entry, because to do so removes at least one vote.
