Thanks for the advice Penny. I have taken it and am doing a giveaway now through Goodreads. Sorry to those who felt bothered by the vote boosts my friends tried to do. It was never the intention to irritate. Please give my book a second chance if you are willing. Thank you.

message 52: by Megan (new)

Megan James, I'll at least take it off my Don't Bother shelf. Your book wasn't the only one, and this happens on all these lists, so I know at least I was getting frustrated. Good luck with the giveaway.

message 53: by Dina (new)

Dina James, I'm removing your book from my to-avoid shelf too. Thanks for taking the time to explain the situation and sorry for having jumped to the wrong conclusion.

message 54: by James (new)

James Ward Thanks! Obviously I understand the situation. In the excitement some of my friends and even I were perhaps a little overzealous and I needed to learn how to properly utilize Goodreads. If anyone has any other suggestions or comments, feel free to message me anytime.

message 55: by Kat (new)

Kat Situation understood. :)

Hi Alex, Thanks for finding the list and Happy 2015 to you too. Good luck with your reading goals. I love it when different books make their way to this list.

message 57: by Caro (new)

Caro [The Book Rogue] And here I come and have a new frustration to vent: Why oh why is there no search field for the list? I think it doesn't group together different editions of the same book to collect all the votes -- or does it?

message 58: by Landslide (new)

Landslide Zessi wrote: "And here I come and have a new frustration to vent: Why oh why is there no search field for the list? I think it doesn't group together different editions of the same book to collect all the votes ..."

No, it doesn't. But if you're a librarian, you can check for duplicates which merges different editions of the same book automatically. I've just done it, so the list is accurate now.

Caro [The Book Rogue] Landslide wrote: "But if you're a librarian, you can check for duplicates which merges different editions of the same book automatically."

Really? I can't seem to find the option, can you point it out for me? Or maybe you need to be master libarian, not regular?

message 60: by Megan (new)

Megan Looks like another spammer made its way to the top of the list, this time with SEVENTEEN(!!!) votes! I give up. *adds it to my Do Not Read shelf*

message 61: by Dina (new)

Dina Megan, I'm not sure it's a spammer. If it is, his minions have worked harder this time, because there are several readers who read this book this year and wrote reviews. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

message 62: by Landslide (new)

Landslide Zessi wrote: Really? I can't seem to find the option, can you point it..."

Sure, no problem. Right after the description you click edit and then, at the bottom, you'll have the option to check for duplicates. Then you click save changes and go back to the list.

message 63: by Megan (new)

Megan Dina, really? I just went through and counted (because I'm crazy): 6 marked it as to-read, 5 don't even have it shelved, 3 read it in 2014, and only 3 (including the author) marked it read in 2015. Am I looking at the wrong places?

That said, I think I'll just ignore this stuff from now on to avoid a heart attack because it's the internet and why do I even bother (haha), and just privately add them to my DNR list ;)

message 64: by Dina (last edited Jan 28, 2015 08:01AM) (new)

Dina Oh, I see! I didn't check the voters' bookshelves, I just went to the book page and counted the reviews there. Yeah, you've got a point: if the voters didn't read the book, it's very suspicious.

message 65: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Cheaters ruin everything. It kills me to have to report them on the top 10. Ruins the spirit of the list.

message 66: by AH (new)

AH Shannon wrote: "Cheaters ruin everything. It kills me to have to report them on the top 10. Ruins the spirit of the list."

They did that last year too. I don't understand why they do it - we all put them on do not read lists when they play with our lists. If it's just empty 5 star reviews, go ahead and report to GR support. They've gotten some spammers off our lists.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It's an author ring at work; take a look at who voted for it.

Caro [The Book Rogue] Landslide wrote: Sure, no problem."

Found it -- Thank you! So from now on, I can help keep it clean of duplicates as well. =)

Don't mention it. We need all the help we can get keeping these lists current. :D

message 70: by J_BlueFlower (last edited Jan 31, 2015 10:43AM) (new)

J_BlueFlower Is there any way we can deal with spammers? Give the book a one-star rating for spamming?

message 71: by AH (new)

AH J wrote: "Is there any way we can deal with spammers? Give the book a one-star vote for spamming?"

I just put them on a not-interested shelf. If you notice them on many lists (ie a book with <50 ratings or so on multiple lists), report them to GR support. They will investigate eventually.

message 72: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Really hope that spammed book at #1 gets knocked off soon...

message 73: by Mills (new)

Mills Not even halfway through February and already more than 1000 books!

message 74: by Naomi (new)

Naomi I didn't realise spamming was a thing that happened on Goodreads. Crazy! Here's me thinking it was a nice honest place. There's a few books already in the list that I've got waiting to be read so I'll try to read them soon and bump them up the list :)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Yes, it happens. Luckily it's usually pretty easy to spot if you know what to look for.

message 76: by AH (new)

AH Susanna - Censored by GoodReads wrote: "Yes, it happens. Luckily it's usually pretty easy to spot if you know what to look for."

For those that don't - look at how many reviews/ratings a book has. Most books on our list have thousands of reviews or more.

message 77: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Feb 14, 2015 09:51PM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Yeah, look at the ratio of ratings to votes, that's usually a big clue. My very favorite are the books that have more votes than ratings (and I'm not counting the "oh my god, release it already!" anticipating lists!).

AH Susanna - Censored by GoodReads wrote: "Yeah, look at the ratio of ratings to votes, that's usually a big clue. My very favorite are the books that have more votes than ratings (and I'm not counting the "oh my god, release it already!" ..."

And - they have a variety of ratings - not all 5 stars.

message 79: by Ilium (new)

Ilium I already gone through over 100 books this year :/ (a big plus for audiobooks)

message 80: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower Looks like one of the spam books was removed from this list (thank you!). The top most spam book is currently at a 61th-place (Easier to Run) with 1 rating (5 star, of course) and 6 votes.

message 81: by AH (new)

AH There are still some spam books below that one.

All by the same author.

message 82: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth has fallen out of the Top 10 are we done with the Divergent series? Meanwhile The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins is dominating with 63% more votes then The Fault in Our Stars by John Green . That's a lot of reads to catch up to.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Girl on the Train has a similar sort of lead on the over-35s list for this year, as well.

message 84: by Jeana (new)

Jeana Budnick I'm noticing a definite theme on this list. Either teen books are very popular or a lot of teens are voting on this list lol.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I think both.

message 86: by Megan (new)

Megan I definitely read a lot of YA.(I'm an adult)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I don't read a steady diet of YA, but I do read it on occasion. I've read some this year.

message 88: by Shannon (new)

Shannon I have to admit I'm a YA reader too.

message 89: by Kate (new)

Kate I read the Maze Runner series this year and most of the other books last year. I'm picky when it comes to YA.

message 90: by Mills (new)

Mills I'm fast approaching 26 and I still read a lot of YA and children's books. Some of it comes from my oldest niece, some of it I read before passing on to one of my nieces or nephews but most of it I buy for myself for my own enjoyment. I'm not sure why. I can only think it's because I enjoy the type of stories that are pretty mainstream in YA but much more fringe in adult fiction. I can only afford to buy second hand, so I'm limited as to what comes into the shops.

message 91: by Mills (new)

Mills So, question folks - for those of us that read more than the 100 you can vote for, shall I/we vote for all I read and then delete my/our least favourites as I/we go along? That way all of the books will still make it onto the list, though some will appear to have 0 votes.

message 92: by Shannon (new)

Shannon That's what I do. Eliminate least favorites and novellas.

message 93: by Kate (new)

Kate I do that as well.

message 94: by Jeana (new)

Jeana Budnick i think it would be really awesome if a book that isn't currently in the top 100 suddenly jumped into the top 10 for May. Legitamely, not by spammers

message 95: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower I just finished the Maze Runner series. I like YA especially The Hunger Games series, but the Maze Runner was a huge disappointment.

I noticed that To Kill a Mockingbird is climbing. Not surprising with all that talk about number two.

message 96: by Kat (last edited May 26, 2015 06:19AM) (new)

Kat I read some YA because I'm a teacher and like to stay somewhat on top of what the kids are reading. Plus, I have a young son and I would like to be able to recommend some good books to him when he gets old enough to read them. I tend to buy the really good ones as a beginning library for him.

message 97: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine If you like this list but want a more age-specific list to vote on and you were born in the 1980s, take a gander at this.

message 98: by Sara (new)

Sara Is there some magic button for adding up all additions of the same book so it's only represented once on the list? (ehm, something feels wrong with that sentence)
I have noticed that "The DUFF" is on the list in three different places.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Yes, A. for librarians, and B. if all copies are already combined.

message 100: by Shannon (new)

Shannon I went in and removed duplicates tonight. Hopefully it will catch them all.
