ChloeLeeNH Help me out! I would love to gather a list of all the Beauty and the Beast themed historicals out there. Any suggestions would be great!

message 2: by ♡Karlyn P♡ (new)

♡Karlyn P♡ Hi! Here are some off the top of my head. 'Once a Rake' by Rona Sharon, and 'Simply Love' by Mary Balogh.

message 3: by ChloeLeeNH (new)

ChloeLeeNH Thanks KarLyn!

I love this theme!

message 5: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Wow! Thanks heaps Kim, I will be sure to find myself something to read for the challenge out of that list...

message 6: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz Some of these aren't historicals so I was wondering if we could add any paranormals?

message 7: by willaful (new)

willaful Hmmm, good question. I'm also not exactly sure how Nemesis fits in... it's a mystery, not a romance.

message 8: by Kim (new)

Kim Post relating to this--
I read this historical romance book that was pretty good but I can't remember the title or one of the main characters name so I'll post what I do remember:
The main character was a French aristrocrat girl named Ariadne(i think). She was supposed to be married to this British Lord (Insert name here) but the rumors about him were so scary and horrible, she steals her older brothers armor and runs away to become a knight.
Maybe it's fate because she ended up the guard of a girl who is eating constantly. Unfortunately the girl is about to get married and to the same guy she left at the altar years ago. So she has to guard the girl all the way to her former grooms friends' castle. Where her secrets gets discovered and........

Teralyn Pilgrim How is the original Phantom of the Opera not on this list!?!

message 11: by Roshio (new)

Roshio Jane Eyre shouldn't be on the list. In the book its acknowledged that she is as plain as he is ugly.

Danna Jane Eyre... <3

I think they got it from the idea that Edward's constantly seeing Bella as lunch.

Though, Twilight's a cheap rip off of Pride and Prejudice rather than Beauty and the Beast, so I really have to wonder why it's so high up on this list.

message 17: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Pope Twilight should NOT be on this list! It is NOT a beauty and the beast theme...and it freaking insults me to my very core that it is on here...seriously, I want to track down the people that put that stupid freaking book on EVERY DAMN LIST >_<

message 18: by Jess (new)

Jess Skyla, I definitely agree! A few of these are retellings of East of the Sun, West of the Moon. That is my favorite fairy tale :)

message 19: by Richard (last edited Jun 12, 2014 07:56AM) (new)

Richard ChloeLee, how about Till We Have Faces? It is C.S. Lewis' retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche.

And did you include the original Cupid and Psyche story? It's not really a separate item as such, but it's part of The Golden Ass by Apuleius.

message 20: by Feli (new)

Feli Collante OOKAY.
Okay.
What is Hush, hush doing here?
Who explains it to me?

message 21: by Gaby (new)

Gaby I love the Vampire Academy series but... Vampire Academy is not Beauty and the Beast in anyway

message 22: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Abbott-Grasso Roshio wrote: "Jane Eyre shouldn't be on the list. In the book its acknowledged that she is as plain as he is ugly."

Completely disagree. As the book is set in reality, and Rochester himself is not very beastly, Jane is not hideous, either. She is a talented artist and intelligent, and that is what makes her beautiful, just as Rochester's dark life is what makes him a beast. Jane Eyre belongs on this list.

message 23: by Kathleen (last edited Apr 06, 2016 12:39PM) (new)

Kathleen Meeker I just added "The Land of the Beautiful Dead" by R. Lee Smith, author of "The Last Hour of Gann". I'm having a hard time deciding which one I liked better, because I've found that the best stories are the ones I never want to end; and both have left me in tears when the last chapter ends and I know that the story is over!
Plus how the hell does she get me to fall in love with lizard men and lich kings!!?? I haven't read any of her other books yet. I might need an emotional break before starting another (I needed one after reading LHG). Plus I'm not sure if I'm ready to get all emotionally involved with any more weird monster characters again... just yet. I'm pretty sure someone said that the aliens in Cottonwood look like cockroaches! I'll hold of on that one for a bit! Still got the lich king romance all up in my head...

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Does anyone know a book like these where the roles are reversed? The beastly woman and the beautiful man? I always see the same tropes, something new would be refreshing

This fits: Lord of the Abyss

Absolutely! Jane is one of those rare characters who carry such an amount of inner-beauty. And as for her appearence, Robin McKinley 's Honour (Beauty) also posseses inner beauty than just pretty looks.

Beauty lies in one's personality.

I voted for Jane Eyre.

In this light, Wuthering Heights is a weak choice. Catherine Earnshaw is not a "beauty".

message 28: by Juliet (new)

Juliet Smith Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow shouldn't be on here either. It's a retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon.

message 29: by Deena (new)

Deena Juliet wrote: "Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow shouldn't be on here either. It's a retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon."

The same is true of East by Edith Pattou.

Noonecansinkmyship (Tissa) Juliet wrote: "Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow shouldn't be on here either. It's a retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon."
Thank you! Yeah they're right though. Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow is a retelling of East of the Sun and West of the Moon which is a Norwegian fairy tale, not widely know, but one of my all time favorites.

message 31: by Christine (last edited Sep 11, 2021 11:27AM) (new)

Christine Hush, Hush and Wuthering Heightsdon't belong on this list. Or Obsidian. I guess I'll point out the obvious, but just because they have a enemy-to-lover type romance doesn't make them Beauty & the Beast retellings.

message 32: by ~☆~Autumn (new)

~☆~Autumn Roshio wrote: "Jane Eyre shouldn't be on the list. In the book its acknowledged that she is as plain as he is ugly."

I agree! What a ridiculous idea.

Beauty and the Beast gets boring very quick.
