Evan I'm a fan of the book, but by my understanding of Steampunk or Gaslight, Diamond Age really doesn't qualify. Anyone else feel similarly, or differently even?

Alessandra I have noticed a funny pattern.

The (currently) number two book on this list, "Blood in the Skies (The Hellfire Chronicles, #1)," has twenty-two votes, all of them number one (i.e. it has 2200 points). Most of the people who voted for it, if you look at their voting records, have voted for very little else anywhere on GoodReads. Some of them have voted for no other book anywhere (Although most of them have voted this one book their number one choice on many, many other lists).

Okay, maybe it's a good book, but then why is it all the same people voting it their number one choice (and not voting for much else anywhere), and nobody else voting for it?

It just looks weird to me.

Lanea It looks strange to me too, Alessandra.

Jain This list is the worst with regard to self-promoting authors. Of the top 100 books, I count 30 highly suspect works (e.g. books with more voters than ratings, books voted on solely by their authors, etc.).

Lanea, I've seen other Listopia lists incorporate rules such as "Don't add any works with fewer than 100 ratings," in an effort to mitigate the damage that self-promoting authors could otherwise cause. If you wanted to add a clause like that to your list description, I for one would be in support of that. (Even though it would mean I'd have to delete one of my own votes, for the highly enjoyable Death by Silver. Though I trust that book will soon reach 100+ ratings as soon as more Melissa Scott fans--of whom I'm one--get around to reading it and appreciating its excellent worldbuilding, charming romance, and exciting mystery plot.)
