message 1: by Daria (new)

Daria There are no gay characters in Uglies or A Great and Terrible Beauty.

message 2: by Nia (new)

Nia I don't know about Uglies, but *spoiler*

Felicity/ Pippa are lesbian, although you don't find out until The Sweet Far Thing. Some people say this was hinted at in the earlier books... personally, I didn't see it.

message 3: by Lori (new)

Lori If you like YA M/M Romance, be sure and check out the YA M/M Romance group.

Pippa and Felicity are revealed to be in love with each other in later books

Mahala Did I miss E.L. Konigsburg's The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World, or was it just not on the list?

I like to believe Cinna is gay.

message 8: by Gabby (new)

Gabby Who in Vampire Academy is Gay?

message 9: by Mike (new)

Mike We need to take The Hunger Games and Uglies off of the list - neither belong.

message 10: by Mike (new)

Mike Same with The Outsiders.

message 11: by Brooke (new)

Brooke Messmer I don't remember anybody from The Hunger Games being LGBT....any character I forgot?

message 12: by BookBlerd (new)

BookBlerd Eona has no GLBTQ characters

message 13: by Wren (new)

Wren Hunger games has gay?

message 14: by Mike (new)

Mike Alright, Hunger Games, Uglies, and The Outsiders are all deleted. I'm fairly sure Eona has at least one LGBT character, since it appears on other lists for LGBT books, but I haven't read it, so I may be wrong. Anyone want anything else deleted, just respond to this comment, and I'll take care of it.

message 15: by Mariana (new)

Mariana Paper Towns?

message 16: by Jevey (new)

Jevey Who are the LGBTQQI characters in Paper Towns?

message 17: by Danna (new)

Danna Who is gay in Paper Towns?!

message 18: by Lainy (new)

Lainy Um Perks most definitely isn't the best book about gays.

Therealbadkitty Who is gay in Vampire Academy?

message 20: by Therealbadkitty (new)

Therealbadkitty Skyla wrote: "Therealbadkitty wrote: "Who is gay in Vampire Academy?"

I mean,it has been a while since I've read the series but I don't remember there being any LGBT characters.

message 21: by Therealbadkitty (new)

Therealbadkitty And I'm not sure if this book is on the list or not but I'm curious is the book 'By The Time You Read This I'll be Dead' by Julie Anne Peters LGBT? I know most of her other books are but I don't know about this one.

message 22: by Mike (new)

Mike Actually, I think Therealbadkitty is right. I don't remember any gay characters in the book.

message 23: by willaful (new)

willaful Tipping the Velvet is an adult book.

message 24: by BookBlerd (new)

BookBlerd What books on this list have teens questioning their sexuality (i.e.being unsure if their gay or bi)

message 25: by Therealbadkitty (new)

Therealbadkitty EclecticReaderGirl wrote: "What books on this list have teens questioning their sexuality (i.e.being unsure if their gay or bi)"

I think Kissing Kate does but I'm not entirely sure since I haven't read it.

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah nobody in the fault in our stars is gay

Adaptation and Empress of the World both feature that.

message 28: by Michael (new)

Michael Brant The Mortal Instruments have a gay character but I would hardly call them books with gay themes...

message 29: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Boisture I don't consider How I Paid for College a YA book at all. But it is one of my favorites, so I voted for it.

message 30: by Brooke (new)

Brooke Messmer Michael wrote: "The Mortal Instruments have a gay character but I would hardly call them books with gay themes..."

I agree.

message 31: by Rainbowheart (last edited Jan 30, 2014 12:18AM) (new)

Rainbowheart Ok, this list could use some cleanup.

Removed these for not being YA....

Freeing
Annabel
Dream Boy
Rubyfruit Jungle
Cry to Heaven
The Vampire Lestat
How I Paid for College
The Road to London
Tipping the Velvet
Son of a Witch
A Boy's Own Story
Magic's Pawn
Orlando
Middlesex
The God Eaters
Blackwood Farm
The Color Purple
Stone Butch Blues
Picture of Dorian Gray
His Roommate's Pleasure
Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit

Removed for not being fiction...

Hello Cruel World
The Full Spectrum
Running with Scissors (also not YA)

I think there's a lot more, but that will do for a start. If anyone else sees something that doesn't fit, let me know and I can take it off.

message 32: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart No prob! A lot of the books mentioned had teenage characters, but they were published for the adult market. Like Oranges, for example, or Dream Boy. It's always kind of tricky to tell, but a good clue is to check who the publisher is (YA imprints are different from adult ones) and also to check where the book is shelved in libraries and bookstores. Still not foolproof, especially with all these self-pubbed titles, but a good rule of thumb.

message 33: by Rainbowheart (last edited Jan 30, 2014 10:09AM) (new)

Rainbowheart Yeah, most of the books teens read in English class are adult books. Teachers don't assign YA books very often, since the point is usually to study adult literature. We read Dorian Gray and The Color Purple, among others.

message 34: by Netta (new)

Netta Don't see why Proxy is so far down there it's such a good book. *sighs*

message 35: by Amy (new)

Amy Burk I'm grateful that Hollywood High: Achieve The Honorable is in the top 100 on this list. Thank you to everyone who voted for my novel!

message 36: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart Ok, did some cleanup on this list.

Removed for not being YA....

Funny Boy
The Automation
Betrayal series
Hadrian's Lover
The Forever War
Cinnamon Gardens
Frat Boy and Toppy
Stockings Required
Tell the Wolves I'm Home
Almost Like Being in Love
Killing the Angel in the House

There's a ton more, but that's all I had time for at the moment. If anyone else sees something that doesn't belong, please make a note here in the comment section so it can be deleted.

Do these have any LGBT themes or characters? I don't think so, but not sure, so if someone could confirm or deny, that would be helpful....

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Selection series by Kiera Cass
The City of Ember (both regular and graphic novel)

message 37: by Elle (last edited Nov 24, 2014 05:18PM) (new)

the book thief definitely does not have any lgbtq in it at all sadly. I don't know about the other three since I haven't read them. Yet.

message 39: by Becca (new)

Becca Sean wrote: "I don't remember any LGBT characters in the hunger games - I mean, the closest I've come to finding any is people speculating Johanna's sexuality, and the Peeta/Gale shippers"

I think Katniss is ace/demi and that is what they are referring to

message 40: by Gabriel (new)

Gabriel Wolfe I don't remember any lgbt characters in The Maze Runner (at least not outside of fan hopes and dreams)

message 41: by Serith (last edited Jan 19, 2015 11:24AM) (new)

Serith Tia wrote: "(spoilers for The Mortal Instruments)

I totally understand what you are saying -and think it's really sweet that the glbt elements of the book has reached you and so many readers- but I think the reason some people don't feel The Mortal Instruments fits is because it's not a main character's struggle, nor is it related the ultimate plot line. Books like that might better fit lists like:
-Books with Queer Secondary Characters
-YA fantasy/sf novels with major LGBTQ Characters
etc. Pretty sure there is more out there like this? Hopefully!

It's one of those things where I'd personally list it here if the themes had a 50% or more of the stage. ...But that's just me! XP I like to think of who will be using this list and what their expectations will be. (that being said I'm happy with any book that even has a background gay couple, but some want more)

I agree with Netta - The Book Thief has no LGBT+ characters. The Selection series doesn't either (At least so far - books 1 - 3). Hope this helps! :)

message 43: by Ava (new)

Ava Sharahy Ugh, can someone PLEASE take Marked off the list? I know Damian's gay, but his shallow characterization and stereotyping makes my blood boil, especially if it's on a list with David Leviathan and Ellen Hopkins :(

I think the Simon\Baz storyline

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

anna and the French kiss? thirteen reasons why? nick and norah??? NONE OF THESE HAVE LGBT THEMES. Nick and Norahs have a few references to minor characters but really.

Hailley Dawn--✖ When you love somebody, they'll always leave too soon ✖ What about the Gone series? Who's lgbtqqi in them?
