message 1: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I had a really hard time choosing between Memory of Water and Natural History. They both look fascinating.

message 2: by Michael (new)

Michael I remember first hearing about Memory of Water in an earlier poll (last year? dystopia?). I'd love to read it with the group!

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah It looks like it's been up three times, twice in 2015 and once in 2016. I also really want to read it. I own it and it's ready to go if it wins.

message 4: by Hillary (new)

Hillary Major Yep, I bought it when it came up in an earlier set of noms, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet (though I still find the cover copy & first paragraph enticing!)

message 5: by David (new)

David Holmes My first thought when seeing Memory of Water was this had better not be a book about homeopathy. Fortunately it appears not.

Other than that, I haven't heard of any of these books, and Hamilton and Wolfe are the only authors I've heard of, and I've only read Wolfe, which I think was not for me. I might just have to abstain from this vote.

message 6: by Hillary (new)

Hillary Major Curious what you've read of Wolfe, David. I've found a pretty big range in his style, between say Shadow & Claw and Soldier of Arete. The former I thought was fantastic; the latter I could appreciate but not really love. Haven't read or heard much about Borrowed Man.

Hadley Fisher Natural history seems like a very engaging book based on its review

Yeah, I was intrigued looking at the write-up. Kind of the same thing as what happened when I first heard about Memory of Water, even though their plots are completely different.

message 9: by Kim (new)

Kim I just started Natural History and I'm liking it so far.

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I really need to read that. I read A Borrowed Man last week and it was really odd. It's like noir but it has a cheery and naive MC. It was a really strange combo.

message 11: by Richard (new)

Richard I've been wanting to read Natural History for ages now. Was overjoyed to see it on the poll.

message 12: by Ellen (last edited Feb 08, 2017 06:14AM) (new)

Ellen Memory of Water is one of the two books in the poll available in my library system so I'm glad it's doing well. I want to read the monthly books but I'm trying really hard not to buy more books (not very successfully) until I've read more of the ones I've already purchased.

That rationale influences my votes a lot too. At my current rate, my unread audiobooks would take me 20 months to finish.

I read The Shadow of the Torturer and part of The Claw of the Conciliator. I thought the world Wolfe came up with was absolutely fascinating... but he completely failed to make me care about that world or the characters in any way whatsoever. After finishing an entire book without the slightest bit of interest what happens to a single character in it, I have a very hard time continuing no matter how fascinating it is.

I still feel bad about quitting just because it is so fascinating... maybe I'll get back to it some day.
