Lynne Can you please explain how the 12 days of summer works before I vote?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads The "chain" sounds fun.

Slayermel We will be picking a word or two related to summer that will add up to 12 letters.
You would then read a book, which has a title that starts with that letter ("A","The" don't count) and you would read them in the order that the word/s are spelled. I hope I'm making sense without writing too much.
so for example if the word was "Mall"
you would read
M-Marked
A-Angels & Demons
L-The Lunatic Cafe
L-The Lion, the witch and the Wardrobe

I hope that helps

Sarah I was planning to skip the next shelf challenge but I like the chain idea suggested by Tara.

Lynne I voted for 12 days of summer but would also vote for Tara's chain. BTW "Vacation Days" just happens to be 12 letters long. I know I am a geek for noticing, but don't forget, I AM a math teacher. :) Now I'll probably spend the next week coming up with all the 12 letter summer phrases I can think of. Did I mention that I am a puzzle freak too.

If we do the 12 days/books we better start soon though, summer is passing by too quickly, and for some of us, 12 books is a lot.

Great explanation by the way, very simple and clear.

Lynne How about "A Picnic Basket" or "Day at the Beach" (and leave out one a) or "SPF Sunscreen" or "Go on a Road Trip". Ahh, I'm obsessed, I probably won't get any sleep tonight. Too bad THIS isn't the contest!

message 7: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel LOL, Lynne you have me in stitches

message 8: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Oh, come on "You have me in Stiches" is WAY too many letters! :)

message 9: by Lynne (new)

Lynne How about "Play Wimbeldon"? That might be the best one yet as it doesn't have that many repeating letters.

Lynne FYI, I think the chain thing with the words anywhere in the title would totally work. I experimented this a.m. with "banks". Up at the top of the screen under where it says sign in/sign out there is a place that says "look for books by title or isbn #" and I just put in the work "banks". I got a list of 447 pages of books that had either:

1) bank or banks as an author (not helpful)
2) nothing I could find to do with banks (wierd)
3) bank or banks in the title (yes!)

I was up to 7 books on the 1st two pages alone. I think that would be a great way to get all of us to read books that we have never even HEARD of before. Talk about pick a shelf!

OK Sis - Some people have WAY TOO MUCH time on their hands. And for the rest of you - yes she is like this at family get togethers also.

BTW - having only done the shelf-a-thon once, I voted to both it and the 12 days of summer. I really like the summer one. But I also like the chain one. I think my vote is going to be to alternate between the three. BTW - Yes, I am challenge obsessed.

Lauren I chose other...

I love the Shelf a Thon Challenge but I think one challenge at a time is sufficient. I like the idea of alternating challenges. Maybe the Shelf a Thon every other time? That way there is a break from it.

I know some started a "challenge rehab" after round 1! :op

Lynne I thought of two more phrases yesterday:

Sip Lemonade or Drink Iced Tea

BTW, I really want to do a chain thing or letters thing. My friends keep giving me books from different genres that I am dying to read but I could probably squeeze a lot of them into a challenge by letter.

message 15: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Did we reach a final decision on this?

message 16: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel The poll's open until Friday, but it looks like the majority votes heading towards a new challenge like the "12 Days of Summer", or Tara's chain idea :0)
I know Karen's been thinking up some new challenge ideas as well, so I would imagine we will know for sure in the next little while :0)

message 17: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Does that mean I should be thinking of more summer time phrases? Just kidding! :)

message 18: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel LOL!!!
Like you haven't been ;op

Lynne How about "Fresh Berries"? Probably too many Rs.

So - Am leaving soon on vacation and need to order books from the library. Do we know what our next challenge is going to be, and when do we usually pick the next shelf? I won't be back until mid August so maybe I'll just sit these out if I don't get to order books before I go.

Lyn I have set up the "12 Days of Summer Challenge" under games. It will start Aug 1'09 when the shelf-a-Thon is complete. This should give you all some time to select your books. :op
Can't wait to get started
Have fun on your trip by the way.

message 22: by Lynne (new)

Lynne I can't wait to see what the phrase is.

Thanks Slayermel, I ordered my first book and think I have some here for the next few letters, so I am in!
