William I've only seen the movie, which is vastly different from the book.

Christopher (Donut) Sheep from goats time, I would "save" this one.
I read it because someone told me it was the best hard boiled novel he'd ever read (viz, better than Hammett or Chandler).
I don't think I liked it as much as that, but it was far less stupid than For Whom the Bell Tolls.
The movie changed a lot. Nathan Lane or someone like that pointed out that since it was based on Hemingway, and adapted by Faulkner, it had more Nobel prize winners involved than any other movie ever.

Still Loved it at the time but that was 20 some odd years ago. As a general rule I love all Hemingway - especially the short stories & shorter novels.

message 4: by Girard (new)

Girard Bowe Haven't read it, but here's director Howard Hawks' comment: "I told Hemingway I could make a picture out of his worst book." That book was To Have and Have Not, and he did! Here's a nice article from The New Yorker about the book & movie:

I haven't seen the movie, but since I'm a Faulkner fan (not a Hemingway fan), I'll put it on my list.
