Would you date someone who hated to read?

It wouldn't bother me as long as they understood MY love for books.

  362 votes, 65.6%

No. They would have to pick a book once in a while or I wouldn't date them.

  54 votes, 9.8%

It would depend on how much I liked them.

  52 votes, 9.4%

Yes. I would find something else in common with them.

No, someone who doesn't read doesn't deserve to share a meal with me...let alone a relationship!

That's a hard question. I've actually had a guy to pretend to be a reader until he was more comfortable in the relationship. I've also found that some men who are non-readers resent the time that women actually spend reading. My father is a great example. He doesn't mind that I read, but he acts like my mom is wasting time (he pouts) if she picks up a book.

I feel so lucky that my husband loves to read. He LOVES going to bookstores with me. :) Although, lately he has been obsessed with audiobooks. LOL I keep teasing him that he is not a true reader anymore, now he is a listener. LMAO! hehehe

Joy,

I can understand enjoying audio books. There are some author's whose books I don't really like to read but that I love in audio. Patricia Cornwell is one that I really enjoy listening to, but I don't care for actually reading her books. Jonathan Kellerman is another.

new_user Yeah, that's a tough one... I'm not sure. Maybe as long as he was understanding?

message 5: by Jackie M (new)

Jackie M My husband doesn't read and it doesn't affect our relationship. Oh wait he does read books for our girls at bedtime.

message 6: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Lane My husband doesn't read, but he doesn't have to we have both shared interest and different interests. He will do something else while I am reading and vice versa. He loves the History Channel and could watch it 24/7, I don't care for it so I either read, get on the computer or do whatever it is I have to do that at that time. We also have shared interest that we do together as a couple. Here is an example: today he is out canoeing wiht a bunch of your friends. I opted to stay home. So far I have gone to breakfast with my family, done some things around the house, read and now I am on the computer catching up and we have an absolutely wonderful marriage......and he only reads things like articles in his dirt bike magazine...I am totallaly fine with it. You make a relationship work and it ultimately has nothing to do with if he reads or not.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic Hard question b/c the majority of what I read is fiction and I feel like it'd be viewed as rubbish to someone who is not an avid reader.

I'd feel like I could NEVER talk about books about a non-reader [like my Mom:] so I wouldn't date someone who flat out said they don't like reading. I'd consider someone who might says reading is so/so. They could be swayed to love it =D.

message 8: by Elvia (new)

Elvia My husband was a non-reader until he picked up the first of the Harry Dresden novels. He's now on book 4.
I used to get "the look" when I would sit and read while making dinner/watching tv/sitting outside with the kids/etc. He didn't get it for the longest time. He would get upset when I wasn't getting enough sleep because of a good book. One day (he is working graveyard shift right now) I told him he should put the book down and go to bed and he ignored me. I said, "now you know how it is." lmao

Danielle The Book Huntress I can't say no. It might happen, but he would really resent how much money I spend on books and how much time I spend with my books. I think he'd have to respect that books are very important to me. I don't think you need to be 100% the same with a spouse/S.O. I think mutual respect is more important.

If he looked down on books and reading, that would be an absolute no.

i would hate it if a guy pretended that they liked to read just to get close to me. if he refused to read at all, as so many people have, then he would have to go. but if he picked up a book once in a while and understood that i read all the time, and it's one of my hobbies, then he would stay. it would be pretty awesome if i was with a guy who loved reading as much as i do though.
in my family, we're all huge readers. my younger sister doesn't read as much- she's refusing to read Harry Potter! i had already completed the series and had started reading HP fanfic when i was her age. lol

Cathiecaffey I'm already married and my hubby is stuck with me and my book addiction, LOL

message 12: by Eva (new)

Eva You can love books or leave them, but just don't get in between me and my bookshelf. :D

message 13: by Kathy (new)

Kathy My boyfriend is a total gamer, so he understands my love of books. We respect what each other is into and it's works well.

message 14: by Anne (new)

Anne I did. In fact, I married the guy. We're divorced now.

When I met my now husband, one of our first dates entailed an outing to Barnes & Noble. It was one of the best dates I've ever had. We still like going on dates to B&N. I think I'll keep him. ; )

LOL! you can 'not care' for books but hating them..mmm? Yeah the bookstore date sounds wonderful! Good idea!

message 16: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Long How about I married someone who doesn't like to read! Just have to find a common ground.

message 17: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne My husband doesn't like to read, but he always wants me talk about what I'm reading. I love that.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* I would like to date someone who heavily reads but that has never happened, hard to find here. My fiance reads sometimes though and I love it when he does. He also loves women who read, I think because when growing up his mother was always reading. He told me he doesn't like to date women who don't read.
