What would you do if bookstores became a thing of the past, and we completely switched to using ebook readers?

I'd throw a protest! I could never live in a world without REAL books!

I don't think that will ever happen.

I'd find ways to track down some paperbacks, and hardcovers, but would mostly use the ebook reader.

  140 votes, 23.0%

I would LOVE it! Ebooks are better, and they are more convenient.

Eh, there would always be libraries so I wouldn't care!

Katherine I could NOT live without book stores. I actually don't read ebooks. Why would I when I can search my used book store for a lovely forgotten gem? Plus, creepy as it may sound, I love the smell of books.

That's not creepy. I love the smell of books too! I think it's because we associate the smell with reading aka our favorite pastime. :)

message 3: by Rita (new)

Rita I would always find a way to find books. I love the feel of a book or looking at a stack of books

Danielle The Book Huntress I'm such a dinosaur. I think real books are irreplaceable. I'd just become more of a book huntress to find real books to read although I'd probably use the e-reader too.

Arch What would the world be without real books?

message 6: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk It's the words, the stories, not the transport method that I love. I already have an Amazon Kindle and love it ... I was one of the first people to have an RCA eBook, too.

I'm the exact same. I love the smell of a new book!!!

message 8: by Amber (new)

Amber Polo Do you mean what would you do if there were no more books printed?
Are you talking only about independent bookstores selling new books, not chains and Walmart?
What about ordering from publishers? Would small publishers be forced to only sell online or go out of business?
Libraries would be seriously affected - prices would go up and what they could chose from might only be "best sellers" from a few publishers.
What about audiobooks?
It's a very complicated issue to consider.

Brook Miscoski I am hoping that someone will make a really cool invention where you have a computer in the spine of the book and the pages are just a display, so that you could have a book that looks and feels like a book and has pages like a book and that you could make notes in like a book and the computer in the spine saves the notes and interfaces with a more capacious storage device to change out books and notes for you.

I don't understand why people always assume that the end of technology is to completely alter a thing for which humans have a feel. The more likely end is for someone who's gifted enough to make something like I just described, because that would satisfy a human tactile need while making use of the advantages of technology. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

Jessica~CoinOperatedJoy EBooks are amazing, but as long as there is a demand for books, bookstores have nothing to worry about. If anything I think it will just make publishing houses more competetive in pricing because right now a lot of books are over priced. I look forward to the healthy competition...and the price drop. ;)

message 11: by Bill (new)

Bill I'm 55 and have over 3000 books so probably have enough to last me until I die but would buy a whole bunch more just to make sure (I'm going to do that anyway). I have no interest in ebooks whatsoever.

message 12: by Kelli (new)

Kelli A world without books would not be one I would be interested in. I'll hang on to my actual books, thank you. :)

message 13: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Lane I love my E-Reader, but I still have a lot of books to read and I still buy them when I find a good sale.

message 14: by Nona (new)

Nona no bookstores? I could live without Starbucks and the over populated malls but no bookstores?!? yes my world would end. I woud still buy the out of print stuff i still want but I think I would stop being a collector of sorts.

message 15: by Verity (new)

Verity I'd be inconsolable. I'd feel a gaping void in my already miserable life =)~

Erin im glad to see that there are no votes for stopping reading! :D

message 17: by Bill (new)

Bill Only 2 votes for loving ebooks better too! I personally don't think "real" books will ever disappear and even if they stopped making new books (which I highly doubt) there would always be used bookstores and online dealers. I actually read somewhere that the last 2 years there have been more books published than ever before.

E-books are just a matter of preference and are not for everyone. I love going on vacation and not having to worry if my luggage is going to cost more because I packed too many books, or the ability to download a book that happens to peak my interest at that moment. There are pros and cons, just like anything else. I also happen to buy DTB (dead tree books) when they are on sale or if I happen to want to add one to my collection. Again, it is a matter of personal preference.....think about the trees you are saving also.

I prefer printed books, but...I like the idea of an ebook reader. I enjoy the fact that it can store so many books in such a small package. It's convient to carry in my purse. However, I will always prefer printed books for my collectables. :)

There are several like that, that will be available this Holiday season or early next year. It has a front and back "cover" which are both screens so that you can read it like a book. It will also be less expensive then the Kindle or any other device. The first one is by Infinite Book Concept and it is actually several pages (as you asked for)...here is the link if you are interested.

http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2009/10/...

The other one I was talking about is by Asus and will be about 160. The link for that one is below...

i hope that helps! Happy Reading!

message 23: by new_user (new)

new_user I don't know. I'd be more concerned that DRM was everywhere than about the format of the book.

The second one only costs $163, which is cheaper than a lot of current ebook readers. Huh...Is anyone going to buy it?

Actually, as much as the Asus appeals to me (not only price wise but because of the full color screens) I will probably purchase the Nook from Barnes and Noble. It has dual screens on the one page. One larger one for reading and a small color screen below for the menu etc. It has more to it then the Kindle (which is still over priced for what it is in my opinion) and it can be held in one hand where as the Asus cannot. But I am still browsing the ebook market and I am not convinced that this is the best out there yet. I know if I can be patient for another six months something mind blowing will hit the market and it will be the mother of all ebooks. So...not sure WHEN I will purchase, but I WILL purchase one. It won't replace paper books, mainly I just want to get all of my newspapers and magazines on it as well as whatever "free" downloadable books is being offered for the week etc.

The Nook is my favorite one too! I was so excited when I got an email from Barnes and Noble telling me about it. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping someone gets it for me as an xmas gift, but if they don't I'll end up buying it for myself next year...

lol. You and me both! bUT, if you don't get it maybe wait a little. There are A LOT of ebooks coming out and each one will be better then the last and less expensive! As it is, I am beginning to question the nook's lack of a keyboard like the kindle has. Does that mean on the nook you have to keep scrolling until you get to, say Darren Shan's Cirque du Freak? I am going to my local BAN to look for myself.

Now that I am getting really used to my "Nook", I am beginning to like reading with an e-reader more! I still get that occasional urge to read a real book, but most of the time I prefer using my e-reader.
