Kristi (kristicoleman) Yay...and we get to start on a 3 day weekend! (in the US), this is gonna be a great read!

Becky I purchased it early and had to stop myself from reading (which I did by starting another Chunkster, Feast for Crows), because it was just so immersive. This is my first "Western" I suppose you'd say.

That's my first foray into the world of "Westerns" too. I read the first two chapters, and it defies all your expectations. It is quite absorbing!

Bob Thanks to whoever nominated this. I'm stuck in some kind of reading "slump" - been having a real tough time this summer getting through my classic chunksters (here and in other groups). Switching to more accessible fiction - especially historical fiction, which I love - could be just what the doctor ordered.

McMurtry is a wonderful writer. Many people have read (or seen the movies of) Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearment, Last Picture Show, Hud, etc. but he also wrote some beautiful lesser known novels. I particularly recommend Moving on by Larry McMurtry Moving On and All My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers by Larry McMurtry All My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers.

Kristi (kristicoleman) Bob...glad you are joining us, I think this is going to be a REALLY fun read! I hope we can help you out of your slump!!

BTW everyone...expect to see lots of horse/western pics as the threads open up...I used to train horses, so I'm indulging in my horse craziness a little! I hope I can find some that everyone will love!

Becky Oh good! I was hoping you'd explain your post on the poll about how "this was bringing back good memories!" Both my sister and I were raised as city girls, but we both married farmers in the country. She is currently raising her horses and chickens, and we're in the process of moving back from NC to farm my husband's family farm on the plains of NE. I kind of feel that this book is appropriate for this time in my life.

I look forward to the pics! And first hand stories! I've never dealt much with horses!

Kristi (kristicoleman) I use to train western pleasure horses, cutting horses and reining horses...as well as showing western pleasure and english pleasure. I started the business when I was 16 and closed up shop when I was 21 (had my son and couldn't keep up with it all). Now I have a desk job, and I crave the outdoors, I don't really miss the horses, but I REALLY miss the freedom!

(none of these are me)

Cutting

Reining

Lahni I'm going to join in. I have 6 week old twins as well as 5 other children and we leave on Sunday to move to a new state. However, I have heard fantastic things about this book and have wanted an excuse to read it. I will do my best to stay caught up!!

Kristina (kristina3880) I have my book. Ready to start. YEA for three day weekend. Happy Labor Day Everyone.

Kristi (kristicoleman) Hey everyone! I was just messing around on Netflix and saw that Lonesome Dove is on their Instant watching site! Maybe we could all watch it when we are done reading!?!

Becky I added it to me instaqueue, but I've been forcing myself not to watch it :D It would be fun to do a group watch and discuss it at the end of the book!

Zulfiya (ztrotter) An excellent idea! Now, how to avoid a temptation! :-)

Becky I meant added it to "my" instaqueue. No matter how hard I try I'm not a pirate.

message 18: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Yay!! I think it will be a blast to watch it together!

Zulfiya...just keep thinking how much more fun it will be to watch together and be able to compare it to the book after we finish!

Amy (bibliocrates) I've had this book on my Mt. Toobie for years. I just dug it up. Hopefully, I can finish up my current reads and get caught up with y'all!

Becky We just had a break so its a good time to catch up. Personally I feel like it reads very fast, the narrative isn't complex in style just super fascinating.

Becky Hey guys, between Sandy knocking the internet out at our house, and our impending move, I will probably be off of Goodreads until late November when we will be back in Nebraska with the computers set up! I cant wait to catch up on reading then!

message 22: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Can't wait to get you back...Good Luck with your move I hope it goes really well! See you soon!

Well, if you're in Nebraska now, I guess it's the book that needs to catch up to you! :)

Becky Think I need to take a "field trip" to Ogallala!
