Book: Blood Bound - Patricia Briggs
Rating: ★★★★
Completed: 10/7
Review:
I have put off this series for too long. I really enjoy Mercy and her menagerie of almost-maybe suitors.
People: Single Male: pg. 98 " My ex-wife decided she is in love again." - Said by Adam Hauptman. He is interested in Mercy, but they are not together at the moment.
Place: Metropolitan Area: pg. 104 The Tri-Cities , unlike Portland and Seattle , doesn’t have much of a permanent homeless population
Thing: Wing: pg. 245 “He’ll take her under his wing ,” I said at last.
Color: Blue: pg. 43 The woman wore one of those fifties-style uniforms that hotels give their maids; this one was mint green with a stiff blue apron.

Book: Penmort Castle by Kristen Ashley
Finished: 08-10-12

Review: Abby was not my favourite K.A. heroine by a long shot, and Cash was, to me, a muted K.A. hero. The story started off being a little ludicrous, but once I let go of some cynicism for the story, I ended up enjoying it. I liked Mrs Truman, the cantankerous next door neighbour, and am hoping we'll see more of Angus in subsequent books in this series.
Person: CELEBRITY - Pg 82. ""He’d nursed it through the maitre d’ of the impossibly busy, posh restaurant scurrying to find the Fabulously Rich and Famous Cash Fraser a table..."
Place: ROAD - Pg 156. "He turned off the motorway and navigated the winding roads of Devon, heading for the coast.”
Item: GLITTER - Pg 370. "At that a stream of bright pink glitter dust poured forth from Cassandra’s wand and Nicola, eyes huge and trained on the wand, wisely decided to stop asking questions. .”
Colour:BLUE - Pg 395. "Her blue eyes were open, warm and entreating and he thought she’d never looked prettier."

Review:Ryann Pierce is a hardworking college student and server at Fire and Ice Club in Hanaford Park. She does her best not to punch the lights out of her customers though admittedly that is sometimes hard to do. When a devishly handsome man sets Ryann's heart to racing and wants to fall at his feet. He doesn't seem to be aware of his affect on her at all. Quinn Donegan isn't your average redblooded male and tries very hard to lessen his affect on the women around him but doesn't really succeed at it. Quinn notices Ryann wanting to get to know her better sets out to be her friend when she obviously wants more than that. Quinn tries to keep his distance by maintaining that he only wants to be friends. When Ryann is targeted by an evil presence Quinn will do his level best to maintain his distance but fails utterly. Will Quinn admit his feeling? Will Ryann get what she wants? What does this evil presence want? Your answers await you in Eve of Samhain.

People: Nonhuman: “Insignificant. Expendable. Inhuman. (Pg. 198)
Place: Mountain: “It struck him with the same staggering force as a weapon hammered out of steel, as unbreakable as a diamond, as steady as a mountain .” (Pg. 378).
Thing: Smoke: “The air was clouded with the mingled odors of greasy food and strange spices, grill, smoke and perfume, and far too many human bodies for his liking.” (Pg. 157).

But my kids are deliriously happy

Eighty Days Yellow by Vina Jackson
Items Claimed:
Person: A flash of shame crossed my mind as I pictured telling the doctor or nurse on duty that I’d had unprotected sex. (pg 109)
Place: Summer and her colleagues had had to spend most of the weekend in the bowels of a damp rehearsal space near Battery Park… (pg 166) -- no score
Thing: She had lined my eyelids carefully with liquid eyeliner, thick and dark, painted my lips a vivid, glossy red and stuck a little silver glitter to my cheeks with Vaseline. (pg 40)
Color: The wood veered towards yellow more than orange or brown… (pg 69)
My Thoughts
Summer Zahova is a free spirit that is all about the music of Vivaldi whether she is listening to it or playing it, whenever she hears it she is transported to her own private world. Dominik is an independently wealthy professor of literature that is looking for a new thrill. Circumstances bring them together just as they both realize that they each are leading unsatisfying sex lives and Summer finds herself in need of a new instrument which Dominik is more than willing to provide. But there are cords (much sturdier than strings) firmly attached!
The blurb invites comparison or at least a likening to the Fifty Shades trilogy which is only valid if you stretch to search for similarities and can only be likened in minor areas (as far as I can tell). 1) BDSM elements in the stories; 2) variation on the title; 3) The male lead has Dom tendencies while the female lead is learning the world and; 4) they are each trilogies. No further comparison should be expected – each series should succeed or fail on its own merit.

Open Space

Book: Dead Man Rising - Lilith Saintcrow
Rating: ★★★
Completed: 10/14
Review:
This is a really dark urban fantasy. A nice break from all the fluff I've been reading lately. It's not my favorite series, but I'll continue with it.
People: Non-human: pg. 440 The demon Tierce Japhrimel touched my cheek, his knuckles brushing my skin.
Place: Open Space: pg. 38 He had a grave marker, of course, out in the endlessly-green fields of Mounthope.
Thing: Stairs: pg. 156 My teeth buried in my lower lip, I stalked through the kitchen, down the hall, and up the stairs .
Color: Red: on the cover

Book: Mine Till Midnight by Lisa Kleypas
Finished: 14-10-12

Review: Great characters and family dynamics, I felt the story was about more than just Cam and Amelia, it also left me wanting more of Merripen and Win, and hopeful for Leo. I'm trying to rate this fairly, but must admit that due to having guests here this past weekend, I wasn't able to lose myself in the story as I might otherwise have done. My reading was stilted, and I felt I lost something of the story because of this. This is by no means the fault of the author, but I can only rate this book from my reading experience. It was a solid 3 stars for me. I loved Cam's character and felt he balanced Amelia beautifully, but was left at the end of the book wondering how they would handle outings into society.
Person: HEALER - Pg 59. " My grandmother was a healer — she taught me many of her remedies."
Place: OPEN SPACE - Pg 26. "Plump white sheep grazed in the fields.”
Item: WING - Pg 72. "Hundreds, no, thousands of them, their iridescent wings beating in an angry relentless hum.”
Colour:BLACK - Pg 120. "With his dark clothes and black hair, Cam Rohan seemed to emerge like a shadow from the night."

Demons Not Included by Cheyenne McCray
Items Claimed:
Person: Single Female on cover (also a few hookups, but she started and ended the story as a single female)
Place:(pg 96) No, he seduced my senses with his light touch, his pleasant taste, his scent of cedar and mountain laurel.
Thing: (pg 172) Olivia's voice made it through the sound of blood rushing in my ears.
Color: (pg 6) Purple and blue are cool colors.
Readability: 3.5stars
My Thoughts:
This origin story had many wonderful things to recommend it and deserves a higher rating than I am giving it. This fast paced new series introduces us to a variety of paranormals with unusual gifts living alongside humans, working together. More clearly stated, the secondary characters were easily accessible to me as a reader definitely established their own places in this series, while keeping in mind that is for Nyx to say how important they will be. They each seem to have enough layers to make them interesting with their own voices making (it look) easy to plot future storylines. In addition to the great world-building, I really enjoyed the atypical Heroine Nyx, who seems to be eyeing the crown of Kate Daniels. I also enjoyed the writing style which seemed to be going everyplace except straight ahead – but you find you have all the information you need when you need it and with no gaps. There was steamy romance, friendships made and lost, betrayals and a huge action piece to wrap everything up nicely. This series has the potential to go the distance and should be wider read.
