Emily My just turned nine-year-old son asked me the other day when I was going to read Robin Hood aloud to him. I had no answer for him, because I'm at a loss as to what version would be a good introduction to the Robin Hood story for someone his age. Is there a definitive one? He's a pretty patient listener, but it still seems to me that most of the ones that come up first in titles searches may be too long and old-fashioned to hold his interest. Any suggestions welcomed!

Terri Lynn (terrilynnmerritts) | 1 comments Sometimes it is difficult for me to recommend books for kids in public and private schools because they are so woefully behind the homeschoolers. Not only have I homeschooled for 20 years but have taught parents to homeschool and have taught homeschool classes and activities and tutored homeschooled children so my typical 9 year old male student, including many of my autistics, can easily read and enjoy both The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle and The Adventures of Robin Hood by Roger Lancelyn Green but it is hard to say if a traditionally schooled kid could handle it at 9 (usually not).

Go ahead and challenge him and read one of these versions. My firstborn read both at age 6 or 7 (I taught her to read at 4) and enjoyed them a lot. She got into a period where she wanted to read that sort of thing and went on to read Ivanhoe and then the Lord of the Rings. She is a fanatic about the latter and reads the Lord of the Rings about 3 times a year.

Either of these Robin Hood editions would be excellent. Boys always respond so well to this story. Reading aloud is something we also do in our family at all ages. We even have people over to read out loud with us.
