Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Where do you prefer to get your books- the library or bookstore? Why?

I like to get my books at the bookstore because I love being able to keep the books and get them exactly when I want them. Sometimes in the library someone has already checked out the book you want and you have to wait.

message 2: by Trip (last edited Sep 01, 2012 06:04AM) (new)

Trip (shardsofromance) Usually the library, unless they have a sale in the bookstore.

Considering I usually read a book only once, I don't see the point in buying the book because it will most likely end up on the shelf with dust forever afterwards.
Although I occasionally will look in the bookstore and if there is a sale I may buy one or two, also pretty covers! I am more likely to buy.
Recently I read on my kindle now though or ebooks ~

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments See- I'd rather buy my books at the bookstore because I am trying to build my own library so that way, if I buy the book it can make my bookshelf bigger!

message 4: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (brasilgirl3598) | 31 comments I get all of my books from the library because I don't have the money to buy every book I want to read. I like doing that because if I don't like the book I can just return it and didn't waste my money. If I read a book I absolutely LOVE or if my library doesn't have a copy of a book I want to read I'll go to Barnes and Noble and buy It. I'll also buy my books at school book fares because they're usually cheaper there or have buy one get one free deals.

I do have a small library of books in my room that I want to expand on once I get some money or find a place to buy the books at a cheaper price.

message 5: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I also get books at my school fairs or through the Scholastic TAB Teen Circular. (It's a circular type thing with teen books that are cheaper than other books.

message 6: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I used to buy all my books, but then I started to become broke lol so I had to slow myself down. I do still buy books but not as many, I mostly take out from the library..which is bad too, because then I am never able to start my own books!!! I don't know why I do this to myself haha

message 7: by Lauren-ashley (new)

Lauren-ashley Hurst | 4 comments Library.... A.) It's cheaper than the book store B.) I love the smell of old library books ;-)

message 8: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 48 comments I would prefer Library books, but unfortunately my town is so small, that there isn't even a local library, so I buy my books, but usually wait for a sale. My school library has some novels but most are pre-1990 so new books that I want to read, I go to the bookstore or buy online! I am a very good bargain hunter though! I recently bought 7 HARDCOVERS for 35$ in total :)

message 9: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (brasilgirl3598) | 31 comments WOW..... That's amazing! I wish I was as great as you at finding good book deals :)

message 10: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I am so impressed Nicole! I wish I could get big sales like that. I love hardcovers but I usually end up getting paperback because they are so much cheaper.

message 11: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 48 comments I bought those books at http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/bargain...
if any of you are interested! It is a canadian bookstore, so i'm not sure how shipping works internationally but they usually have some current books in hardcover for very cheap! #5 is cinder-marissa meyer and it is only $5.99

message 12: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Thanks so much Nicole! I'll have to look through it.

message 13: by Onie (new)

Onie Thomas | 26 comments I like getting my books at thrift stores. I just kinda shop around for the books that look interesting and buy them. If I really like a book that isn't at the thrift store, I just get it from Amazon. I like having my books so I could possibly go back and read passages I like (i highlights things I like).

message 14: by Lauren-ashley (new)

Lauren-ashley Hurst | 4 comments I like garage sales and community church sales too. I've found quite a few good books that way never thought about thrift stores going to have to check that out. I like going back and rereading some of them.

message 15: by Mimi (new)

Mimi | 29 comments I go to both. My mum is an English teacher so she doesn't hesitate to buy me books. I don't know if they have Chapters or Indigo in the States, but she get a small discount for being a teacher and stuff. I reread my books all the time and I like having a big collection. When I get my own home, I'd like to have a big library/office, to read and write and work on my paintings and play my piano and stuff.
Though if money is tight or I'm not sure I'll like I book, I go to the library. If I absolutely adore the book, I'll buy it. If it wasn't up to par or if I hated it, I'm grateful for not having spent money on the book. I like the whole experience of libraries.
So I guess I'm in the middle...I go to both very frequently.

message 16: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments We do not have Chapters or Indigo in the U.S. as far as I know. When I have my own house that was always one of my dreams too-to have a library filled with books! I am just like you- I love to own my books but I also like to go the library in case I don't like the book!

message 17: by Mimi (new)

Mimi | 29 comments It irritates me how expensive books are.

message 18: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 48 comments Mimi wrote: "It irritates me how expensive books are."

I completely agree!

message 19: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I agree as well. I wish they weren't as expensive ! if I was granted 3 wishes from a genie that would be one of my wishes! (hey, that's a good idea for a game: If I had 3 wishes)

message 20: by Trip (new)

Trip (shardsofromance) Looks like we are all in agreement on how expensive books are. I mean I wouldn't mind as much if i actually had the money *sigh* ~

message 21: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments EXACTLY! ahah

message 22: by Krishna (last edited Sep 16, 2012 08:15AM) (new)

Krishna Bajaria (krishnabajaria) I buy it from the Bookstore. I love new books and I love having them on my bookshelf :)

message 23: by Becca (new)

Becca (beccatheawesomeone) | 49 comments I usually try to check out the book first, so I know what I'm sending my money right. But I don't like mystery stains either.

I also like new books because they (call me crazy) smell great.

message 24: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) If I haven't read the book before, I get it from the library (unless I know the Author's works very well, and then I'll just buy the book). I stopped doing faith-buys a long time ago - books are just too expensive to go and buy one that might be horrible. And I am a genuine book collector, so I buy books that I've read. However, I do love to do my "title scouting" at bookstores. I'll browse the shelves, write down titles, and get them from the library. And if I like the book, I'll buy it.

message 25: by Mimi (last edited Sep 02, 2012 11:30AM) (new)

Mimi | 29 comments At my library if you damage a book, you have to pay a fee.

message 26: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Same here; my system recently began overdue fines as well.

message 27: by Becca (new)

Becca (beccatheawesomeone) | 49 comments Same with my library. But they never tell the librarians, so the books remain damaged.

message 28: by Mimi (new)

Mimi | 29 comments Really? People either just pay the fee right away, or when the librarian checks the book she usually notices it.

message 29: by Haylee' Marie (new)

Haylee' Marie (beastly-marie) | 105 comments bookstore.. because the books are in better conditions!

i go into Books a Million and i treat it like a library when i cant buy that book i sit down and read and get lost into it and stay there all hours... haha :)

if i read it and like it ill go buy it because i do not want my money wasted on a book that i may not like at all

message 30: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments Bookstores!!! Library is my choice when money is limited.

message 31: by Jannah (new)

Jannah (lumpyspceprincess) | 82 comments I like a bookstore because I like to buy my books and read it again and again. Also I like adding books to my bookshelf.

message 32: by Cookie (new)

Cookie (cookie_monster_zebra) | 2 comments I would love to buy my own books, but my mum's reasoning against is that I would spend a couple of hours maximum reading a book, then never read it again. (Actually, I re-read, but she has a point). I live in New Zealand, and books here are so expensive that it's actually way cheaper to have them shipped from Amazon in America, than to buy them from a bookstore here.

I just keep up with my favourite series' online, then reserve them from my local library ages before the books are released, so I'm often one of the first to read it.

So as much as I would love to buy my own books, I simply can't.

message 33: by Sapir (new)

Sapir | 138 comments I prefer the library.
I mean, I love buying books, but I have to admit it's not a smart thing for me to do, since I NEVER read books twice. I don't see the point in this - I already know the ending, than why reading it again?!
The library always has a special atmosphere and the smell of old books. I can't step into the library without borrowing a few books, even when my shelves are packed.

Lol... so true! I've reread only a few books so far.

message 35: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I don't reread either because I already know what happens but I just love having all of my books on my shelf. That's why I go to the bookstore!

message 36: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) *gasp* You don't . . . re-read? How is that possible? How can you not go and revisit a book? They're like old friends; I always find myself wanting to spend time with the characters again and experience the adventure with them just one more time, even though I know how it turns out.

message 37: by Sapir (new)

Sapir | 138 comments Jacquelyn wrote: "I don't reread either because I already know what happens but I just love having all of my books on my shelf. That's why I go to the bookstore!"

Exactly like me!! I just love seeing all of those books with their beautiful covers on my shelf ;3

and Mara - People keep telling me this, and I try to reread books but I always give up.

message 38: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments The only books I reread are classic. Like Bride Price (I've read it more than 5 times), David Copperfield...
There are so many books now that I cannot go back to "visit old friends". But I keep a list of my most favorite books, so it'd be easy for me to reread if I don't have anything new to read. But that hasn't happen yet. I still have a ton of books I haven't read yet. So the reread part has to wait :)

message 39: by Marie (new)

Marie | 56 comments I used to love the library when I was younger but since last year, I prefet bookstore. I like collecting books and I really like having them when I want to reread them .I only reread my favorite and I don't really care that I know the ending. I always notice different things each time I read a book.

message 40: by Janie (new)

Janie Brumfield | 36 comments Bookstores! I love the atmosphere of bookstores.

message 41: by Trisha, lives on coffee (new)

Trisha | 30284 comments I wish I could go to the bookstore more, but I'd go broke (absolutely broke!) paying for all the books I read.

I pay for my library membership though, because I don't have any libraries for my little town... I love my library!!!

message 42: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiehodgkinson) I like both personally. I tend to find random books to read in the library but have, more recently, been buying books. I like the idea of creating a proper bookshelf full of books I will actually read rather than ones I got given when I was younger and will never read now! Only thing with buying books is the risk if you don't like it, but I think it's worth it for the experience in my opinion.

message 43: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments Yes, buying books is not only a huge expense, but also a bit risky.
Lately, most of the books I've read were so boring and some I couldn't even finish.
Besides, it is getting hard to find a place to put up a new shelf. My house is not that big.

When I get my own place next year it's gonna be in my little interior design project to have a nice bookshelf or something to store my books on/in :)

I guess when you read that many you have to find way to get access to more books. I usually borrow from library and friends also. Even I don't read as many as you (around 20 a month).

message 47: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 15 comments Mostly bookstore because then I get to keep the book and take as long as I want to read it, but I do also like going to the library because you can find new books and if you are not sure if you want to buy a book you can read it first without having to pay anything!

message 48: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) Bookstore.

In my place there's no really a library for Novels.. only for academic purposes.. Usually most people here buy novels and sometimes they borrow books from their friends.

message 49: by Mehsi (new)

Mehsi Usually the library for the Dutch books. For English books I go to (online) bookstores.
I wish my library had more actual/new English books. Though... I would already be happy with more English books no matter if they are old or new.

Do you prefer reading in English or Dutch? Is it much different? (sorry if that sounds like a stupid question)
