Cheryl (cherylllr) Ok I'm done with Big Fish. I can see the appeal to the right reader, but I barely gave it 3 stars for my own enjoyment. Still, it's off my shelf - yay!

Any points I should be counting or specific things I should say about it?

message 3: by Larae (new)

Larae Blankemeier (laraetx) trying to get into my book, I'm a bit confused already. Reading Afterwards

Let me think on this a bit more. Stay tuned. :)

message 5: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 937 comments Just a suggestion.. Could this be a month with no points as we have all been 'given' a book it might be nice to not have points?

message 6: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59948 comments That would suit me. We didn't do any points the last time we did this challenge.

message 7: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments Ah a nice relaxing non-competitive month then (apart from the half year challenge of course), sounds like a plan :-)

message 8: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments You guys have finished already?!

message 9: by Larae (new)

Larae Blankemeier (laraetx) Amber (sorry, I'm not sure how to do the reply thing) I'm only about 7 chapters into it, and the chapters are fairly short. I'll stick with it and try to figure it out. Thanks, I'm sure it will get better

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments Rusalka wrote: "You guys have finished already?!"

Hell no haven't even started my one yet so don't panic ;-)

message 11: by Gemma (new)

Gemma Mine hasn't turned up yet! Also, I've managed to send it to my Mum's house instead of mine, so she'll have to send it on - I'll not be starting until later in the month :(

message 12: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Sep 03, 2012 04:31AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments *phew* I get daunted by all these super speedy readers in here I just had a momentary panic.

It's worth remembering that some times I forget to think and run around like a Muppet waving their hands in air... I apologise in advance ;)

LOL!!! I know that feeling...

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

HA! That's class. I do a pretty good Kermie impression myself at times...
Not started my buddy read, although I have collected it from the library.

How far into it are you? I was also confused in the beginning, but it'll start coming together. (Have you ..."

I figured out the reply thing now, it doesn't have that option on the app, so had to do it on my phone.

message 19: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59948 comments ROFL! Thanks for the laugh this morning Rusalka.

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 937 comments But watch out for the mad lady pigs!

message 22: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Too funny, Rusalka!

message 23: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Hi ho everyone, Rusalka the frog here. No pigs around here thank goodness, Piggy is my least favourite. However my chickens run around the backyard like Muppets, it's uncanny how close they are. Maybe I should upgrade to Gonzo...

message 24: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Gonzo is adorable.

I read my book fast because I was excited and because it was short - please nobody feel competitive. :)

message 25: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 937 comments I'm struggling with my book. It's making me feel like I'm a rabbit caught in headlights. Am carrying on with it for a bit, but if I don't get my head round it I may have to stop.

Good luck Suzie! Maybe it will all magically fall into place when you least expect it :)

message 27: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 937 comments Thanks Kat. I felt the same with Wind Up Bird Chronicle and I persevered with that so I probably will with this. Having a break from it for a day or two before I try again

Cheryl, DO NOT neglect the movie because of the book! ☺

message 29: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments The Big Fish movie is great. Definitely put in on your must-see list.

message 30: by AmyK (new)

AmyK (yakyma) | 1045 comments I finished reading Still Alice this afternoon. Loved it. Thanks for picking it for me Pragya!

message 31: by Ava Catherine (last edited Sep 05, 2012 07:06PM) (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments I have read Mudbound Mudbound by Hillary Jordan Hillary Jordan and really enjoyed it. The racial divide in the South was revealed in a stripped bare manner. Black soldiers fought for American freedom in WWII but were not allowed to walk out the front door of a store or ride in the cab of a truck with a white man. A black midwife helped Laura when her daughters had whooping cough, but there is a time Laura does not help Florence like she could because she remembers Pappy saying that blacks will riot against the whites.
This book brings the hardships blacks had to endure in the South to light. It also reveals the effects of war on soldiers and how sometimes families do not understand PTSD. We also see how family dynamics play an important part in how the family fits into the community.
The last section of the book is so engaging that I felt like I was on a roller coaster! I could not put the book down because everything was happening all at once, and the suspense was so tight I could hardly breathe. I like that the book ended on a high note.
I highly recommend this book and thank Janice for recommending it for me!

message 34: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4031 comments I am only 8% into Graceling so far. Getting confused by the tons of info in there. Also reading 6 books at a time is not helping.

I do read fast in general, but it all depends on the book and whether I'm into it enough to keep picking it up regularly throughout the day. This one managed to get me right off the bat and the kids left me alone to read (good thing for them!)

message 37: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) The movie of Big Fish was good. In some ways better than the book - at least it was easier to understand the themes. But it was true to the vibe, the atmosphere. I did enjoy it, thanks.

Good to know the book engaged you and poor kids, lol!

I'm done. I read Singled Out: How Two Million Women Survived Without Men After the First World War and thought it really interesting.
review here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
No doubt I may have got to it eventually, but a good push to read it.

message 40: by Larae (new)

Larae Blankemeier (laraetx) i really think i'm gonna give up on my book. i just don't get it. i can't even tell who is telling the story. i'll see what next months' challenge is.

Aw, that's too bad that you aren't getting into the book.

Afterwards looks interesting to me, but then I love mysteries.

Kimberly | 2033 comments I started my buddy pick of The Whole Truth (Shaw, #1) by David Baldacci The Whole Truth by David Baldacci I'm 50 pages in and this one isn't written at all like his Camel Club series which I love. This one isn't grabbing me yet but I hope it gets better. The style is so different I'm having a tough time getting involved.

message 43: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I started Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China Wild Swans Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang a couple of days ago,, daunted by the bulkiness. Ripped through 100pp so far and keep on wanting to sneak off at work to read it.

Not a fan of counting my chickens... uh... swans before they hatch but looks like a winner so far. (what? It's spring, I'm allowed bird humour)

I loved this book. I only picked it up because it was on the 1001 books to read before you die list. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have come across it on my own, but I'm glad I did!
