Hi, My name is Adelaide Blair and I started this group because I love classic genre fiction (all of it.) I didn't want this group to be limited to just one type, because there is so much good stuff out there. (I like literary classics too, but I think more than enough other groups have that covered.)

Christopher Baldwin (christopherbaldwin) | 41 comments Hello! My name is Christopher Baldwin, and I joined this group because it sounds like a entertaining selection (and I like Adelaide). Also, I draw most of the day and so I plow through a lot of audiobooks, so it'll be fun for me to have some focus here and there.

Hello! I'm Casey, currently a high school senior as of 3/28/13. I love classic literature (Great Gatsby, Dracula, etc.), and enjoy discussing it with others. Fantasy fiction also has a place on my shelf, along with manga, so feel free to talk with me about them if you'd like.

message 15: by Mark Cheverton (new)

Mark Cheverton Hi, I'm Mark. I just re-read Destination: Void by Frank Herbert. First time I read it was 35 years ago. There aren't writers like him anymore. Now I'm on the next book, The Jesus Incident. If you've never read this, you should, It's the ultimate in Classic SciFi, but it's not trash!!!

Hey Mark,

Welcome to the group! We love classic sci fi, so if you have any requests for group reads, just add them to our suggestions thread. (Any genre titles actually.)

Tess Hello, I'm Tess. I am doing a research project to see how far computers can appreciate Gothic Fiction. What is good? What is bad? Why?

So many questions...

message 20: by Galaxy Press (new)

Galaxy Press (goodreadscomgalaxypress) | 3 comments Hi, I'm Cat and I'm a huge classic pulp fiction fan. My favorite genres fall into sci fi/space opera, classic fantasy and then randomly, classic westerns and mysteries. I work at Galaxy Press.

Right now I'm reading Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Neil Gaiman, and after this I want to read Dune again.

♥,
Cat at Galaxy Press

message 21: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1170 comments Hi, Cat! Welcome to the group. I'm sure you'll be able to add alot to the group, with your love of classic sci fi and fantasy. We've just read Hyperion by Dan Simmons last month, which everyone liked.

message 22: by Harry (new)

Harry Slaughter | 1 comments Hi folks. I'm a liberal arts type who dropped out of school to pursue high tech. 20 years later I'm realizing science will never substitute for art. I want to start reading again.

My goal is to spend less time in front of the TV and more time reading.

Having read a couple of modern novels (The Martian, for example), I was not impressed in the least. I want to read books that don't just pass the time, but fill it with some meaning.

This month's selection looks interesting. I'd better get started.

message 26: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Hi! Just stumbled across this group and it looks pretty great.

My name is Kirsten (or Kirsti) and I live in eastern Washington State with my 70-year old mother and my 16-year old Australian Shepherd mix. I like all sorts of books but especially science fiction and mysteries.

I love James Bond, Godzilla, the X-Files, and I will watch every movie Colin Firth stars in!

message 27: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1170 comments Welcome to the group, Kirsten! I hope you like it here. I've discovered alot of interesting books from being in this group.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Thanks, Cheryl! I think I have a lot in common with you guys.

message 29: by James (new)

James Rennard (jamesrennard) | 3 comments Greetings! My name is James and I have been on Goodreads for a few years, but didn't really start to get back into reading until recently. In my search for a few genre-specific groups to join, this one popped up. My recent reads have all be "classics" or a type or books of centuries passed, so I thought it would be good place to jump in.

To add, I was thrilled to see that next month's book is from one, if not my favorite, authors.

My reading generally focuses on smart sci-fi, dystopian, mind-benders, and authors that not only create detailed stories, characters, and worlds, but are also speaking to societal issues, either directly or between the words.

I can't wait to share and discuss!

message 33: by Janet M (new)

Janet M (pianogal) | 5 comments Hi, I'm Janet and I'm glad to find this online book club! My library's clubs seldom choose books I'm interested in, so this is a great alternative. I enjoy a variety of genres including Rendell/Vine-type mysteries & psych.suspense, classics, some historical fiction, occasional biographies, stories set in UK such as by Maeve Binchy. Thank you, Adelaide, for starting this. I've often had questions after reading certain books; now I can come here and join the discussions.

message 34: by Janet M (new)

Janet M (pianogal) | 5 comments hey, I'm just wondering why they call these discussions "Trash"??

message 35: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1315 comments Mod
Because genre books are often called trashy.

message 36: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1315 comments Mod
Also, Hi Janet!

message 37: by Janet M (new)

Janet M (pianogal) | 5 comments Hi Adelaide!
So that's "trashy" as compared to Fine Literature, or what would be not trashy? I always thought "genre" meant what type literature it was. I don't get it.

message 38: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1315 comments Mod
Genre books are what we call books that are not usually considered "literature". (Like sci fi, mystery, romance, etc.) Most of the classics groups on goodreads are focused on the classics of fine literature instead of the classics of mystery, horror, crime etc. We don't read classic lit, we read classic trash. (Or books that were thought to be trash at the time, but are now considered lit.)

Janet,

Here is a link to the group's bookshelf, showing what we've read and some that will be scheduled in future months. This might give you a feel for the type of books Adelaide is talking about.

message 40: by Janet M (new)

Janet M (pianogal) | 5 comments Thanks, Adelaide and Cheryl for educating me. Never thought of Ruth Rendell or Patricia Highsmith as genre trash writers. I just thought trash as being books with lots of cussing and gratuitous sex. Guess I've lots to learn!
I'm reading Rendell's "A Fatal Inversion" right now. Then on to "Mildred Pierce" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and Michael Christie's "If I Fall, If I Die". All classic trash, I suppose.
Glad I found you guys!

Jessica Robin | 1 comments Hi everyone! I’m jessica and I’m a work from home mom trying to find ways to read more now that I don’t have a long train commute. My favorite books are the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman, the Hobbit, Game of Thrones, and some holdover young adult love for the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander and the Enchanted Forest series by Patricia Wreade. I’m looking forward to reading a book with a group, especially with the genre focus on the classics.
