Don't you hate book/reading slumps? How long did your longest book slump last? How did you break it? What do you normally do when you get in a book slump to get over it?

Awilk -never sleeps- (awilk) | 98 comments I have short slumps, and thankfully they are rare. I always find going back and re-reading an old favourite helps me out.

CaroleDee Oh geez, I run into a book slump at least once a month. They usually last for about a week and it seems like I've already read everything worth reading. Usually I get out of it by getting excited about an upcoming release from an author I know I love. Or I switch genres for a while. I've def burned myself out on certain genres before.

I've noticed my worse book slumps come after finishing a long awaited book, especially when I love it.

Rebecca Huston (telynor) | 28 comments I had a book slump last about two weeks once. I agree, going back and rereading an old favourite always helps. And of course, switching genres. Keeps things fresh.

Not sure it was a book slump but I did stop reading for a couple of years. I just couldn't get myself to read anything except for magazines and the like.

Jessica (studioeastrat) | 511 comments My TBR pile is so huge I rarely go through a book slump but when I do I usually reread something that I loved and that puts me back on track....or I pick a book that has a ton of awesome reviews. Usually that helps too.

message 8: by Abby (new)

Abby | 70 comments I just had a slump not long ago... A few days ago was the first time I've been able to read a book for 2 1/2 months.... Had to go back to reading fanfic for a while but now I'm back to my books :D

Jessica (studioeastrat) | 511 comments I am too jealous. Take lots of pictures. I think I would die or at least become a babbling fool if I ever got close enough to meet him. Let us know what you think of the movies too.

message 16: by Abby (new)

Abby | 70 comments Yea... I think there will be tears if I can actually meet him...

message 17: by Julie (new)

Julie (musicaficta) I've had a few. The first was when I was about 13 or 14, and partly because I was too busy with school. Another slump was during college - again, too busy with school to even want to pick up a book. Then a few years ago, I had severe depression, and I had a hard time being interested in anything. It lasted for a long time. I read quite a bit of manga, but not really any books. Now, sometimes there's a week or two that I take off reading, but usually because I read about 10 books the week before.

Ashley (shinhbang) | 139 comments My book slumps are usually just during the school months. College just really sucks the energy out of me, that I can't bring myself to read anything. And if I do happen to read during those months, I'd feel really guilty. *shrugs* That's why I take advantage of the summer to read.

Desiree M ~*~*~ LiveReadCollect (livereadcollect) | 109 comments I hate book slumps. Usually for me it happens once or twice every few months (3-5 months). My longest was about 3 weeks maybe a little longer and I would start reading something and stop within in the first 50 pages.

When that happens with 3 or more books in a row I know I'm in a book/reading slump. Eventually I'll snap out of it and I don't really know how I get out of it but I do. Unfortunately there are just those times for me when reading anything seems like a chore. The one upside to reading slumps for me though is that I write a lot more. So at least there is some positive.

My sister had a long period where she didn't read (because of bad health issues), and reading fanfiction got her back into reading anything.

I am going through a bit of a prolonged book slump. I have ups and downs where a book gets me going. I think it's because I have a lot of required reading (reviews). Usually a good paranormal romance or historical or Harlequin book gets me out of my slumps. Also, I watch tv or movies. Right now, we are watching Doctor Who and it's great because it's resting my reading chops and booting my imagination.

That's a long time. I think I would be really depressed if I had one that long. I'm glad you are over it.

Yes! Rereading favorites can propel you out of a book slump like a rocket!

message 24: by Zee (new)

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 688 comments I move to something light and fluffy. Generally I just need to recharge my reading batteries, and a chick-lit does that for me :)

message 25: by Nomad (new)

Nomad I went through one for about 3 years. I primarily read magazines and fanfics. I was on bedrest, complete and utter boring bedrest for both my pregnancies and I had 2 kids in 2 years. I think that being depressed and then having HORRIBLE post partum depression with my son left me in a slump for a lot of things. Including reading.

Believe it or not, I discovered the Black Dagger Brotherhood during this time. I was told to check them out, they were exciting and the first two at least didn't require much commitment from the noggin to get through. It was true Dark Lover and Lover Eternal were easy, enjoyable reads that required little to no effort on my part. So when I got to Lover Awakened, which did require more of an active reading experience, I was able to give it that.

So that's why, no matter how much I complain about the series these days (And I have me some complaints!) I'll always keep coming back. It helped to get me out of a crappy and depressed time. Post partum sucks!

So BDB brought you out? I don't remember what book brought me out of my long slump. I remember I was reading a bunch of historicals. I think I grabbed a book I'd already read before. I got rid of hundreds of books but kept a select few. It was probably Julie Garwood or Kathleen Woodiwiss.
