I've been here browsing around for a few days and I've noticed something a little troubling. Most everyone here seems to really love writing, but I see countless messages where the writer cringes at the thought of any kind of promotion or marketing their freshly-printed masterpiece.
Here is something to think about. If you write a book and do not at least attempt to promote it, you are not writing a book for public consumption. You are writing a very complex diary.
Promotion is the mainstay of any successful business, which writing ultimately is. This is why you see countless posters, ads, radio bits and other marketing material for items you must have. The book you just finished should be treated the same. It is a product you want everyone in the world to purchase.
Promote promote promote.
Tell every person you know through every means you can that you have a new book out there. Do everything to ensure people keep talking about your book. Remind people over and over and over that they need to buy, read and tell others about your book. Every single opportunity to promote your book should be taken, every signing chance, table spot at the mall, or even just a few copies at the local PTA.
The only person stopping you from making your book successful is you. Get out there and promote your book, asking for help if you need it.
If you noticed, the title here drew you in. You need to do the same for your book. Draw people in any way you can. Sell that book so you can work on writing your next masterpiece.
(For those looking for my qualifications to speak on this topic, I have an undergraduate degree in marketing and an MBA. I founded the Brotherhood of the Kilt and developed it into one of the largest non-clan based kilt organizations on the planet with zero advertising budget )
