message 151: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I don't like being horrified generally, though there are some carefully chosen exceptions.

Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey are for sure on my do not read list.

Most often, I try to get a sense of whether a book will work for me. Then proceed if the signs are auspicious : )

Me too.I read spoilers and make sure it will work for me.
I don't mind being spoiled.

Janice I honestly did agree with every word. It is happening under our noses. Only yesterday the the headline news item here was the arrest of a man who tried to set up a fake online account as a 13 year old girl. He had been set up by a group of people out to catch pediophiles. He is a producer in the state broadcaster. Nowhere is safe for our children.

No need to apologise, Janice. I agree with what you are saying and as Margo said, this kind of thing is still happening today and if anything, it's getting worse. I personally think it's good when a book invokes strong emotions, be they positive or negative, and I think it's equally as good when books tackle difficult themes. In many ways, books are mirrors of society and if they can help to shine a light on something negative going on within society, I personally think of that as a positive thing as it might force people to sit up and take notice of something that they might not previously have even considered. Obviously I appreciate that reading is very individual and some people read in order to escape from the real world and therefore don't want to read about difficult or upsetting things, but I actually often seek out books that tackle dark subject matters because I want to learn more about them and I feel that the more knowledge I have, the more I can sympathise with victims and maybe even do something to help them in the future.

You don't need to apologize, Janice. We all feel touched by this topic.

I agree with you about predators and victim blaming.
Lolita is a vey ambiguous book, though... You don't fully grasp if the author is exposing or understanding the man. I think he did it on purpose...
Unfortunately, I read it in a traslation, not the original, but I could say the writting was mesmerizing.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I will never read the "Fifty Shades" trilogy. Working at the library, I have encountered a lot of people who have. All of them have told me it's horribly written, and not worth the time. :/

i heard it was one of those books that would appeal to the person that does not read very often but if you do then it is not the best .

a bit like if macdonalds was the first burger you ever tasted but then you discovered
