Agreed. Out of the current horror writers, he's one of the few that can make you visualize the scene and have it haunt you for months after.

Best book by him? Dead Sea is my favorite. Skin Medicine gets rave reviews as does Deadlock which comes out Tuesday. Nightcrawlers was a blast. Fear Me and The Underdwelling are two of my favorites as well and are great examples of how well he draws the reader into his stories. You really can't go wrong with any of them!

Do Mr. Curran's books rely very much on "the old ultra violence" and profanity? he said trying to hide his Pete The Prude hat!

Dead Sea has a lot of profanity but it fits the characters - they're old sailors. It'd be weird if they didn't use it. I don't remember for the others so that means either it wasn't used or wasn't used to excess.

Really like Tim Curran's work. He's hit and miss for me, and I certainly haven't read all of his books, but I keep checking amazon to see if anything new is on there. He has real skill when it comes to perfecting a line, and his imagery is second to none.

Fear Me--doesn't seem to be on kindle right now, but looks interesting.

Favourite so far: Skull Moon (another horrific horror west tale in the vein of "Skin Medicine")

Toxic Shadows comes in a close second. Thought it was really well done.

Really enjoyed the premise of Dead Sea (very twilight zonish) but I felt this one got away from Tim in a sense--just seemed to go on a bit too long in places.

The Hive--love the Lovecraft feel to all of Tim's books--this one in particular is great for atmosphere--but I couldn't get through Hive 2 (I'll try again).

Ultra violence and profanity? If you are sensitive to this, then I would not recommend Curran.

If UV&P doesn't bother you, by all means, pick a poison and start reading Tim.

Keith - I see what you mean about The Hive being lovecraftian. It looks like a mix between At the Mountains of Madness and The Thing. I am not going to be able to pass this series up!

I thought the same thing (ie, a mix of MoM and The Thing) and it is. Very well done, you get a true sense of dread and awe in places, like the characters really shouldn't be where they are. I will have to try the second book again. I might not have been in the mood for horror or something on the first attempt.

Keith, those three novellas in the collection Matthew mentioned are fantastic ! I think you will enjoy the heck out of them. :)

I'm definitely going to have to check him out. His name keeps popping up. I did just finish my last book, so who knows? Maybe tonight.

Dead Sea gets a little repetitive with the descriptions of the fog but it burns the atmosphere into your head. Read through that to see what is in the fog; you won't be disappointed. ;)

I'm going to have to read it. Sounds like possibly a little like Stephen King's The Mist, which was pretty awesome,

Now that you mention it, I definitely see similarities. I never thought about it that way before.
At least in The Mist, they had the solidity of the ground beneath them. The guys in Dead Sea do not. :(

Picked up Dead Sea! I'll come back with thoughtsas I read or when I finish. Looking forward to it.

That would be a psychological advantage in scaring someone - taking solid land from you and hearing (and seeing before you die) the things that go bump in the night. Sweet :)

Tim Curran has the most incredible imagination in horror today.
His re-imaginings of everything from the Cthulhu Mythos to HG Wells War of the Worlds are breathtakingly original.

K4tie, I thought we were all ready GR friends, duh how could I have missed that! And I do as your picture says, I wear an old coat while I buy new books, great advice.

I have no idea who this guy is but people keep talking about him and praising his books so I figured I'd look into some of his works. Surprisingly enough I have a book of his, Skin Medicine on my to-reads list. I am sure it's just one of his many great novels. Everyone has Tim Curran fever kind of like how a few months back every one was praising H.P Lovecraft and at the time I had no clue who he was either. I don't know, perhaps the least I can do is read one or two of Curran's novels and see what all the hype and hoopla is about.

I have as lendable if anyone is interested, as well as quite a few other Curran reads. ;)

Skin Medicine was a super cool read. I love the Curran western books. This one and Skull Moon were both excellent. :)

Well my interest is peeking so I'll check out Skull Moon as well.

I liked Toxic Shadows.

I'll give both Skin Medicine and Skull Moon full marks. Skin Medicine did had a section that went on a little too long for me, but it was only setting up a very shocking revelation later on in the book.

These were the first "weird westerns" I think I ever read, and I've been looking for similar reads since.
