Just in time for Halloween, I would suggest reading John Buchan's Witch Wood in October this year. It has been many years since I've read it, but the environment / landscape plays such a prevalent role in the story that I still remember the atmosphere as though I read it yesterday.
Exploring the theme of society's role in nature and the glowering suppression of the woods at night - especially to the people of 17th century Scotland - this novel uses the local landscape as a powerful character in its own right.
I'd love to hear your reactions...I plan to read it again myself in the upcoming weeks.
