Hey, it's been killing me that I can't remember the title or author of a short story I read in middle school that had a serious impact. . .

It was in a kind of run-down jingoist/ultra-nationalist future society where most young men are sent off to fight in a hellish war against the "other nation..."

the story follows one recruit as he goes through the war, and hears these loudspeakers in his sides bunkers and tanks exhorting them to fight the vile foreigners and stuff. But he manages to infiltrate the enemy base only to find that it's exactly the same as his own base, and the government has been faking the whole war, sending its citizens to murder each other to keep up the wartime rhetoric and fervor that keeps civil rights in check.

I can't remember who wrote it or what it's called!
