Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments What do you use as your bookmarks? Do you "dogear" (that's one of the most annoying things ever!) or do you just use random pieces of paper?

I make bookmark monsters (you can find DIY videos on YouTube) and that's what I use. They're so easy to make and they're so cute and easy to use!

What do you use for your bookmarks?

message 2: by Trisha, lives on coffee (new)

Trisha | 30284 comments I don't dogear because I hate destroying any part of a book!

My fav. one is one I got from my local library!
There is a group that makes them out of yarn and donates them to the library. They crochet a rose at the top and then crochet a line and then put a pretty gem at the bottom!

Mine is blue with a blue gem at the bottom. I love having a rose poking out of the top of my books to mark my spot! :)

message 3: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Yes, that is why I don't dogear either!

I think that is such a great idea! It's so simple and it's perfect! It's kind of funny to think something so small and simple can turn out to be someone's favorite of something (as in this case, a bookmark!) Love it!

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Sarajayne wrote: "I admit to folding pages down more often than not. Otherwise I'll use scrap paper like old receipts and such. I really should get myself a nice bookmark since it's something I'd use all the time."

If I don't have one of my bookmark monsters on hand, I will use my receipts from the library (you know, the ones you get from the library and it says the day they are due.) I think getting a nice bookmark for yourself would be great. They'll last you for such a long time, and they're not expensive!

message 5: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Oh that's a good idea, it saves paper! I don't go to the library often, so I like the idea of having the receipts in case I forget the due date.

message 6: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Aahha, that's okay if they think you're a nut! Atleast, you're a going to be a smart nut form all the reading that you do!

I was wondering, maybe do you want to do a buddy read with me?

message 7: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Umm...
I was thinking about What's Left Of Me by Kat Zhang or Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

Message me for the rest of the details! And then, I can create a folder for our buddy read! I'm excited!

message 8: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments I love drawing, so I have made several bookmarks by drawing pictures I like and laminate them. I have made some for friends also :) The one that I really love is a drawing of Dee Dee (from Dexter's Laboratory).

message 9: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments That's also a really great idea, Gisbelle!

I hate that!

message 13: by Gisbelle (last edited Sep 29, 2012 06:34PM) (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments Thanks guys!!! I kinda got the idea from watching a Japanese show when I was a kid :)

It's fun. You can even attach a paper clip at the back if you like. I have made several this year. A picture of giraffe is also nice. I made one for my little niece last month. We colored it together :D

message 16: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments TRUE! Sometimes , I might dogear textbooks to indicate the page that I'm doing for homework but still that kills me , because it still is a book!

I have a laminate machine at home. But if you don't have the machine, you can use scotch tape. It may not be as good as get it laminated, but it can be done. I used scotch tape before I had the machine.

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Oh okay! Cool!

message 20: by Trisha, lives on coffee (new)

Trisha | 30284 comments there are also easy laminate you can purchase at a paper/form/supply type of store - it's easy to use and you can use as much or as little as you want! I have found it at Staples, Fred Meyers - even Target and Walmart have it!

message 21: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Ooh! Thanks Trisha! I'll make sure to look for it.

message 22: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments Hey guys... You know what a book thong is? I saw on the internet the other day. I have no clue, but they look awesome.

message 23: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments They're like little ribbons that you put on the page you ended on. They have little beads on the ends.

message 24: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments Ah... So we use it like a bookmark, right? They seem easy to make also :)

message 25: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Yes!

message 26: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiehodgkinson) I have a magnetic one that I've been using for years. I love it and it isn't too harsh that it damages the pages either, it's great :)

message 27: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments Okay, are you ready for my nerdism? (new word there) I use a "real" bookmark depending on my book. I color code them when I can! LOL I have one hand-woven one that a student brought me from Guatemala that I use. I also have some spiritual ones that I use, especially if I've been down or when I'm reading a spiritually uplifting book. In addition, I have my crazy Red Hat Association one that talks about being elderly and still being able to have fun.

message 28: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (shellsea) I use bookmarks that my little sister makes for meee :D

message 29: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I love the new word.....nerdism!
Your bookmarks sound so cool! I wish I could see them in person! That's right! Elders can still have fun......Truly, they are children at heart.

HAHA.......Nerdism. Nerdism. Nerdism.

Maybe I should submit it to Websters Dictionary as the newest word booking it with book nerds. LOL

message 31: by Sapir (new)

Sapir | 138 comments I ALWAYS use a bookmark.
I like to keep my books clean and tidy, as if I just bought them...
I have 2 3D art bookmarks and I mostly use them (:

message 32: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia (cecilia-reads) I always use a dollar or a fake flower

You SHOULD! Lol..

Sapir.. I always use a bookmark as well. I hate messing my books up. I don't want to spend my money to destroy my books. I know what type of bookmarks you are talking about, I love them!

message 34: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Ceci- I never heard of that idea but I like it!

message 35: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments I wouldn't use dollar. It leaves weird smell on the page :) I like to smell my books (I am not a weirdo, just a book-sniffer), so sometimes I use scented paper if the bookmarks I've made are not near me :)

message 36: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Hahaha..Gisbelle I like the scented paper idea!

message 37: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments :D at least I am not alone :P

message 38: by Bunny (new)

Bunny (bunnyboo123) | 156 comments I use my collectable MLP:FiM Pinkie Pie card, or my library ID. I used to draw them myself, but then I'd misplace them somehow and could never find them.
A lot of these ideas are good, I like the scented paper, especially in really old books.

Yes old books smell nice :)

message 40: by Katie (new)

Katie | 68 comments Wow! I either use my library sheet or a piece of paper on my desk :) i have to try scented paper though. That sounds really fun!

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a dangerous obsession with bookmarks. I use 3 x 5 index cards because as a college student I have a lot of them. I don't make or buy nice bookmarks because they are either too heavy and they ruin the book or I lose them and get really annoyed with myself. I cannot dogear a page.

I used to use index card too :) But it is also fun to make our own bookmarks. We can customize them to fit the books :D Some people I know print out sayings and use them as bookmarks :)

message 43: by Mash (new)

Mash I usually just put the book down to where I was reading it, so all I have to do is pick it up, turn it around, and start reading. Other times if I'm taking it somewhere I either find a loose leaf of paper, or I dogear (unless the book is really good). And I don't know why.

Nuuu...don't dog ear the precious books :o
But I have a tendency to just put the book down when I need to go somewhere quickly or something when I can't find my book mark or anything to put in the book.

NOOOOO......NO DOGEARS! I'm going to go cry in the corner right now!

message 48: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) just a typical bookmark. I don't like the one that looks like a giant paperclip it ruins my books.

message 49: by Raquel (new)

Raquel (ahnabella) the first piece of paper I find :)

Merryn (memerrynwhoyou) | 16 comments Raquel wrote: "the first piece of paper I find :)"

Me too! I get furious with my sister if she dogears my books. I don't usually get nice book marks because I always lose them, and I don't use giant paperclips because they leave an indentation on the book. Sorry to the friend that bought me one for my birthday!
