Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments A new feature for the Group Reads! Don't fancy reading First Grave on the Right or Death with Interruptions?

No problem! - this is the thread where you can discuss any other book that fits the theme 'Death / Dead Character Narrates, or is the Main Character' and still gain a participation badge.

It's also a great place to find buddys for buddy reads - have fun!

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11458 comments Very fond of Darynda Jones' series. I will probably participate in the discussion, but not read it again.

I think that I will be reading Death with Interruptions and Death: A Life.

I'd be very happy to re-read & discuss Mort ( or any of the Death series) by the fabulous Sir Terry Pratchett if anyone would like to. Death takes an apprentice, who happens to be called Mortimer (Mort for short). One night he gets sent out to do "The Duty", as Death refers to it, and all sorts of happenings result from a misplaced swipe of a scythe. It was my introduction to the diskworld series and it is still one of my favourites.

Hi Helen, I have
Mort right here on my bookshelf. Is this the first book in a series?

Discworld is a funny place. There are a few storylines going on with a few different groups of characters eg. Death, the Guards, the Witches, the Wizards. Because of this, there is no real start to the series.

I fluffed around reading Discworld novels as this confused and startled me. Then I sucked it up and decided to read Mort as the first one. Really good intro book to Discworld because of the story which I won't go into.

April | 970 comments hmmmmm...well, I have the book, Helen. If you decide to do this, I'll gladly join in!

Rusalka's right, there is the series of books set on the Diskworld and then there are sub series that feature different character sets. In the discworld series, Mort is book 4, but it is the first to feature Death as a character prominently. Having read them all (several times) I'd agree that there are a few places to start.

http://www.lspace.org/books/reading-o...

shows how the character groups link and which is the first to feature them as central character(s). Have to admit I've never read the series in that way, I've always read my way through in publication order. But maybe that's as I've collected them as they were published, not had the whole series to choose from to start.

I was thinking "how confusing", but once I looked at the chart, I think I understand more. I wanted to start Discworld but thought it overwhelming because it's a huge series.

So that's one taker for a Buddy read - I assume I just pop into the buddy reads folder & set up a thread, then sit back and see who piles in.
April & can we twist Janice's arm?

April | 970 comments Come on, Janice....join us for Mort Mort (Discworld, #4) by Terry Pratchett ! (twisting arm)

Janice (jamasc) | 59940 comments As much as I would like to join the buddy read, I have a funny feeling I'm going to end up in 5 South (the psychiatric ward at our hospital) by the end of the month with everything I have to do this month.

Anyone want to do a buddy read in November of "See Dick, See Jane, See Spot"? Or whatever it's called. Wow - GR has the book listed: Read With Dick And Jane We See

Did you find it funny?

Amusing. George Pendle is really good at including pop culture in the narrative. He always took me off guard, but once it was accomplished, I had to chuckle "That he actually thought of that"..

If you decide to read it, I warn you that the part of Jesus Christ's plan for the Second Coming was a bit over the top for me.

Janice (jamasc) | 59940 comments I read Mort for the buddy read with Helen, April, and Almeta (hope I didn't miss anyone). I almost forgot to discuss it here - don't want to miss out on any badges.

I enjoyed the humour in this Discworld story in which Death takes an apprentice. Death wanted to experience life (had a bit of a mid life crisis in my opinion). The image of him smoking a cigarete with the smoke curling out through his skull made me chuckle. While he was out trying to experience "fun", Mort was fulfilling the duties of reaping souls.

All in all, a fun fantasy read. It was a bit confusing in places.
