A lot of people can't stand it when people type over-exaggerating texting shortcuts, like:

hy r u cumin 2 da dnce 2nite?


Then, there are some people who type like this:

R U coming 2 the dance 2night?


Then, there are people who type like this:

Are you coming to the dance tonight?

What do you do? Do you hate people who type a certain way? Do you think text talk is annoying and overused? Share your thoughts:

I think I normally do:
hey you comin to the dance tonight?
But that's just me. I don't mind people who use it but if they use it so much that I can't understand why they are talking about then I have a problem.

I think I'm the same way, I don't like it when people go overboard and I can't understand anything they're trying to say, but I can deal with stuff that has minor shortcuts, you know?

I don't mind reading the shortcuts when people text them, but I think it's the writer in me that I simply can't bring myself to type them! So I would definitely be on the "Are you coming to the dance?" team! :>)

When I text, but the closest thing to text talk when I type is when I miss key or goodreads is being slow.
I hate over exaggeratted text short cuts!

The thing that aggravates me the most is when people write like that. I mean, i'm in seventh grade and people want to write like this:
the loYalists wer blief deeple to BritAn (The persons paper I was grading in social studies)

I mean thats freaking messed up how 12 and 13 year olds don't know how to use any punctuation and can't spell a dang thing right!

Also, in math some people don't even know how to long divide or do a regular multiplication problem. They use these sloppy squares called latice.

I type some shortcuts, but I tend to type them more when I'm texting than just typing on the computer or on GoodReads. But I know a lot of people who are against any kind of shortcuts and don't understand them and get frustrated when people send them texts with shortcuts in them. Like my mom, for example. :)

Hey, have any of you guys noticed that even though a lot of people do texting shortcuts these days, when you text a new person, you're always surprised at if they do or don't do texting shortcuts? I don't feel like I'm making any sense right now.

I'm in 7th grade too! Even though I've never seen a paper like that I totally know what you're saying. People will send me notes and they'll say "Hey :)" when they could have just put the smiley face rightside up since, um, they aren't texting or on the computer. It make no sense!

I'm a fail at grammar. I always put too many commas or not enough. Plus I can not spell for my life.

I can't believe someone wrote that on a paper! I have never seen anyone do that! I couldn't even understand what that said at first.

Yeah I understand.

I'm awful at grammar, too! I'm an ok speller but grammar counts as 1/3 of my English grade so I am nervous.

Personally, I make a point of using proper grammar, syntax, spelling, etc, but that's just me.

I'm not the best or even really good at spelling, punctuation, and grammar, but I at least try. Also, nobody uses paragraphs in my school/grade. Nobody, but me:D

I don't mind as long as Ican figure out what they're saying. I'd prefer English but text is ok... I type a moderate in between

No one uses paragraphs? I feel weird writing a paper without paragraphs. It just helps me keep everything organized.

I think its okay to shorten but other times people change words when it takes just as much typing. For instance anything being changed to ny thing. With the space its the same amount of work so why change it? Lol

It annoys the crap out of me. I type full words, as long as I'm not about to run out of texts space. Like over the 160 characters. :p!

i used to use text speak all the time in my messages, but now i use predicted text some i only type some shortcuts like lol, tbh, ikr, omg, wtf....

I would probably write it like
Hey r u coming to the dance tonight?
The only shortcuts I use are; r, u, cuz and ikr

I always use proper English for texts to the annoyance of my friends.. and I'm not very fond of text talk! Lol I know I'm strange..

I don't text much really ( but i don't use like "2" and stuff usually. It looks weird to me and i don't really like it because i dont know why people cant write out a couple words stuff. I usually say "ur". i sometimes say "you" and sometimes "u". it kinda depends. and i like never say "lol" or "omg" ive also never said them when i was talking out loud when im talking to my friends. I feel funny when i say it. haha

I know what you mean, i feel weird saying "omg" and "lol" out loud... but I know some people who do it.

Text talk annoys me if it's used in any context that isn't texting. It's just harsh on the eyes and sometimes difficult to read.

I've got unlimited text with my phone plan, so I think I have no excuse for bad grammar/spelling, particularly with predictive text means you only have to type like, half a word. Also being a writer I'm kind of a bit paranoid that someone will find a typo in anything, whether it be a text or email or facebook post and say "Geez, she can't even spell right, won't bother with her..." That's why twitter scares me a little, I'm a bit verbose...

My pet hate is people actually saying LOL rather then just bloody laughing!

I haven't been texting very long and so sometimes I will type out a word like 'you' and sometimes I will just use the letter 'u'. I'm still trying to get used to the idea of all the shortcuts but I don't really care for them. I will use 'lol' and some others but that is it.

I don;t care about using text short cuts as long as I know what they are saying. I use the text shortcuts as well. Sometimes its just too much to type everything correctly if you want to do it quickly or if its a long message

I use to kinda hate if but it's become a way of life now. Even my piano teacher, one of the most old fashioned people ever, is starting to use text talk in messages. It's very efficient and a fast way to get a message out there. But unfortunately this is leading to somewhat bad grammar in school.

I dont mind it at all unless they are using numbers in all the words for abbreviation then definitely no

I really hate text talk. I actually banned my mum from using it; told her if she used it for texting me, I wouldn't reply! Thankfully she soon stopped the text talk.

I just think it's so lazy. A lot of people fall into bad habits because of it. It's just awful.

The most frustrating bit is that my sister uses it, yet she's a primary school teacher. How can a teacher use text talk?! It befuddles me.

It's much different with us because we don't usually text using english but instead we use our local language (like another language/dialect under Filipino) so words usually get jumbled/altered a lot and it would totally look made up to those who don't understand it. Like saying "Where are you going later?" we text "Dn ka mkd2 krn?"

Also, I tend to exaggerate simple words such as "Okay" sometimes when texting. Instead of typing "okay" or "ok" I text it like "awkie" or "ukie" lol xD

Texting is sort of a norm here plus I text more than I call people so no, I don't think it's annoying or overused. I don't mind sending/receiving shorthanded words at all. And it didn't affect the way I write words on paper, or type them in things such as these :)

I properly spell everything out.
I hate seeing "LOL" because I know that person is probably not laughing out loud, so I say "Haha" when something is funny.

I do use "Idk" for I don't know and "Omw" when I'm on my way (mostly because I'm usually in a hurry when I'm on my way.

My boyfriend and I also say, "Uhhhh" a lot when we text, as a joke when the other one says something dumb.

I think it's irritating when people take so many shortcuts - like what are you doing with the extra 5 seconds you saved by doing that? Come on, man.

I personally find it pretty annoying when people use a lot of shortcuts in their texts, but I think idk and lol are fine.

i generally don't use single letter words and i have NEVER used 2 instead of to/too XD but i will use abbreviations, especially idk (or if i don't want to curse i sometimes use shortcuts). i often type in all lowercase but capitalize proper nouns/book titles and still use punctuation. i do type with uppercase letters a lot though, and it depends who I'm texting. it's honestly kind of random. i like changing it up whenever i feel like it, even in the middle of a conversation... :)

i like having abbreviations for things, but when people have their entire sentence of text talk, that’s too much. like i’ll use idk,lol, the basic ones that everyone understands.

I use abbreviations but not too much and I like to punctuate the sentence properly.

I like grammar so I try to just type normally. But of course I do use slang and acronyms like omg, ofc, idk, and stuff like that when I'm lazy and being silly with my friends. Also got into the habit of using "r" for are for a while now but I'm trying to get out of it

I just wonder what people do with all the time they save from writing "k" instead of "ok" :)

i don't know but I suck at typing so it leaves less room for error if I do

Personally I don't mind text shortcuts, as long as I understand and it's not overboard.

I don’t mind it when other people use text shortcuts, although I never personally use them :)

Text shortcuts aren't all that bad until it gets to the point people start saying: LMGTFY (let me google that for you) and say lol out loud instead of actually laughing.

Yea Maya, it really gets on my nerves sometimes. My friends are exactly like that! Sometimes, I don’t even know what the text shortcut is until they tell me!(it’s probably some made up long one)

I can definitely relate to this

I actually hate it whenever people always break whatever they want to tell into each separate text.....like why cant you just type it all in ONE TEXT !!

I never use anything other than proper grammar except for omg and sometimes k. I just don’t understand it.
