I've been thinking for a while that we are overdue for a Readathon! Last time we had one people had a great time and said that they hoped we would do more. I think that was a year or more ago!

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing a Readathon for this coming weekend? A lot of poeple have Monday off so we could start Friday night and end Monday night.

Please let me know if you are interested and if we can get a small group together then we could do it.

For those of you who are new to Readathons let me explain. A Readathon is when a group of people make a commitment to spend a certain amount of time reading and then posting their progress. Some idea's are to count pages read, books completes, chapters, etc. Then we would come back to Goodreads and chat a little about what we read that day or even more often. You can do whatever it is you would normally do during the weekend, but the challenge is intended to get people reading more then what they make time for on an average weekend. Some people are very serious about Readathons and will clear their schedule and have a whole method to their reading. Other people will just enjoy the extra book chat and read the same as they do each weekend.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 675 comments You know I'm in! :) It'll be a busy weekend what with family dinners, but I never turn down a read-a-thon!

Wooohooo! You will need breaks so you can sneak a couple of pages here and there!

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments Unfortunately I'll be out of town (10-year high school reunion, ack!) and doing little if any reading this weekend. But I'll be back home and place to myself on Monday, so I can definitely do some reading that day!

message 8: by Angie H (new)

Angie H I would join you ladies, BUT since its Thanksgiving Weekend in Canada, I just don't think I would get much reading done. Next time though, for sure! =)

Since we didn't get many participants for this I was wondering if people were just busy or is this not something that interests people anymore?

I just like to get ideas to keep our board active and make sure people are having fun.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 954 comments I ended up not reading much til 2day.

I think maybe it was too spur of the moment and people didn't know about it or didn't have enough time to plan. We can try doing another one in a month or so and maybe it will give people more notice. I also think that these tend to go better in the colder months when people are inside more.

message 15: by Andrea, Moderator (new)

Andrea | 4456 comments Mod
My total Readathon pages was 400, I'm happy with that!

message 16: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 21 comments Andrea, I am a little late on the read-a-thon but now I understand what it is about. I will watch for the next one and join in. My goal would be to read 401 pages just to say I read one more page than you did. haha!

message 17: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I think it would be fun to have one more of these before the end of the year. I'm going to set up a poll to get opinions on when the best time would be.

Thanksgiving is a nice extended weekend (for those of us in the US) but I know people have varying levels of family/social commitments.

Maybe the following weekend would be a better option for some, before Christmas preparations get too hectic.

Or we could wait until the weekend after Christmas, and do one last big push to close out the year.

So, I'm setting up a poll with these three options to see which works out best for people. (Or, if you happen to have a different weekend that would work best for you, let us know that as well.)

Of course, Read-a-Thons -- like all of our group activities -- are completely optional. And, even if you do participate, it's not like you have to spend all your waking hours reading. It's just fun to challenge yourself to read a little more than you otherwise might, knowing that your fellow group members are doing the same.

Vicki, you are too funny! I'll have to read 402 so I know I'll be ahead of you...lol

Charleen, I am up for another readathon or even more than one. I also agree with you it doesn't mean that you have to spend the whole weekend reading, but it is good if you make a little more time than you do in a normal weekend. We don't need a lot of people to do it either. Even 3-5 of us would work to keep it going.

message 19: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments Well there is still some time left on the poll (I set it to end mid-Nov so we'd have time to organize) but it looks like the weekend after Christmas is the most popular thus far. So I'd say we should plan one that weekend for sure. We could certainly do more than one, I just wouldn't want people to get burned out!

message 20: by Andrea, Moderator (new)

Andrea | 4456 comments Mod
Good point Charleen. We can talk again when the poll is finished and see what we think. Thanks so much for getting this going though :)

message 21: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I don't know how much I'll actually be able to participate (holiday/travel plans are completely up in the air at the moment) so I figured the least I could do was get started on the logistics side of things!

message 22: by Andrea, Moderator (new)

Andrea | 4456 comments Mod
Not a problem, I have no plans that would prevent me from being able to check in at least 2-3 times each day.

message 23: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments Well, it looks like "Weekend After Christmas" wins, with the long Thanksgiving weekend as a close second. At least 6 people were interested in doing it this weekend, so hopefully you guys can get some good reading in (I won't be able to participate, unfortunately).

I sent everyone an event invitation for the Readathon this weekend. We had 7 people that wanted this weekend when we did the poll so that should be a nice group! Remember, even if you only have a little time here and there you can still participate!

Mimi V (naomi_v) | 9 comments i'm glad it starts friday. i'm off work this week and i'm disappointed at the (very small) amount of reading that i've been able to do so far. let's hope that it improves beginning friday!

message 30: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (grannybeez) I would love to participate! I read between 40 & 60 books a month. I am disabled so have a great deal of time to read, am also a speed.reader.

I'm new to goodreads and this group. Feel free if you would like to have a reading partner or chat about books

Naomi, I hope this helps you get some reading in. I'm so far behind I don't have a shot of reaching 75 this year.

Barbara, I'm so glad you found our group! Please feel free to jump in and make yourself at home. We are a very friendly group and read a lot! Beware your list of books is going to grow.

Does anyone have a plan for what they are going to read this weekend? I'm going to work on a list of what I want to get to this weekend. I'll post it tomorrow.

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 675 comments I'm currently reading Krampus: The Yule Lord, so I'll be working on finishing that. If I finish that early, I'll start on The Archived.

The plan is to start today at 5 pm and end Sunday at Midnight. If people want we could extent it to Monday at Midnight?

message 36: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 954 comments Andrea, finished Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires, #1) by Rachel Caine just now, so on to Locked In (Jessica Daniel, Book 1) by Kerry Wilkinson

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 675 comments By Sunday at midnight, do you mean the end of Sunday? Because technically that's Monday at midnight. :P

message 38: by Andrea, Moderator (new)

Andrea | 4456 comments Mod
I think we can extend it to Monday and that will be a nice way to end the year. Keep in mind there are no requirements for participation - just join in when you can.

I’m going to post the thread in a few minutes. I had planned to be home tonight but we have some last minute plans so I will have to wait until a little later to get on.

My intended reading is to:

Finish the last 370 pages in Brothers Karamanzov

Finish the last 237 pages in the Pretties

Finish the last 197 pages in Lose it Fast

Finish the last 203 pages in Bridge of Sighs

Read Love Anthony 309 pages.

Finish the 178 last pages of Another Thing to Fall

Total Pages: 1494

I am also listening to The Tiger’s Wife on CD and I hope to finish that up as well

If I can complete all of this it will give me a total of 64 books for the year. It’s mission impossible but it will be fun trying!

I know, I'm pretty much an unrealistic nut, Naomi!...hahaha I always set crazy goals. My total for the last Readathon was 400 pages...hahaha

message 43: by Mimi V (new)

Mimi V (naomi_v) | 9 comments 400 pages is pretty good, Andrea! good for you!

i'm reading two books right now: Sweet Tooth and Amsterdam, both my Ian McEwan

i started Sweet Tooth months ago, and because it's a hardcover, it got set aside (too much to carry to work every day. i do a good bit of reading while i commute and at lunch.) Amsterdam is actually the first Ian McEwan book that i ever read, and since i recently returned from Amsterdam, i thought i'd read it again. if i finish Sweet Tooth before the end of the year, i'll be very, very surprised.

message 47: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 21 comments Just finished Out of my mind which was 295 pages. I rated it a 3 star book. The story was well written for YA's. I am starting to read Gracefully Insane that has 244 pages. With two books read I am at 591 pages and counting.

I loved gracefully Insane, Vicki! I'm about 30 minutes from McLeans and I have a weird facination with mental illness. I hope you enjoy it.

Also, 591 pages is awesome!!

message 49: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 21 comments I am also interested in mental illness so,I wonder what that means about us? Huh? I remember my psych. rotation,in nursing school, was fun but, scary at the same time. Looking forward to starting the book tonight. Oh,I suppose your page total is 592 pages? Haha

message 50: by Andrea, Moderator (new)

Andrea | 4456 comments Mod
I'm not sure what it means about us but I think I would enjoy working in a place like McLeans.

My total is 821 so far, my best ever readathon total!
