Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments This is the place to discuss the group fiction choice for the next two months, which may still be free as an Amazon Kindle book.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 252 comments Must be free in UK? Perhaps? - Not Amazon US I'm afraid, where Aussies like me have to buy. Mind you it's still cheap, nuffin to complain about.

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments Hi Bryn. I did check again before posting - it was still free in the UK then.

I can see it as free on Amazon.com too.

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Bryn: If you don't mind listening to the author narrate, it is available (free/by donation) from Podiobooks.

Thanks for that suggestion, Ancestral. I haven't tried much audio, but - the author as narrator tempts me.

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments Is anyone reading this one? I began a while ago, but was just getting into it when other things took over. Will continue soonish, hopefully.

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) I've read it, a long time (years) ago.

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments I'm struggling a bit with it. It could have done with a final edit, also it feels somewhat tangled at the moment with the different dreams. No doubt the separate strands will come together soon - I just hope I can hold out that long - there's the danger of losing interest altogether.

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Nell, stick with it. It does come together and make sense, but it is a slow starter and, yes, it is in need of some serious editing. Even so, the story shines through in the end.

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments I'll hang in there, Ancestral :)

Jimilyn (uruviellowen) I'm reading this book; however, I haven't gotten all that far. Maybe I can finish it up over Thanksgiving break next week. Teaching does have its perks. ;oD

Sometimes the dream parts throw me until I realize it's a dream...and I have to back up a bit and get another running start. But even so, I am enjoying the book.

...wanders off wondering if she ever posted an intro in the group.....

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments I find that I greet the dream parts with what seems almost like relief - the writing seems more natural and relaxed than in the sections that take place in the present. Could just be me though.

Jimilyn (uruviellowen) Nell, I'm now about 40% through the book and the dream parts are not quite the jolt now that I've gotten all the different subplots down. ;o) I really enjoy the dream parts. :o)

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments Yes, the dream parts are the best bits, methinks. I find the modern sections something of an interruption that bring one down to earth with a jolt - I know they're necessary (given the plot and structure of the story), but all this isn't helped by new characters appearing all the time when it feels as though there are enough already. IMO Samantha is an annoying stereotype, but I know I'm hard to please when it comes to fiction :)

Jimilyn (uruviellowen) I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't enjoy the Samantha character. Perhaps those parts will serve a purpose as I read further; however, at this point, they simply seem to detract from the rest of what is going on. It has been a long time since I've seen anything mentioned about the gentleman who is having disturbing dreams, so I have found myself wondering why I have to read about Samantha and tapes when I'm much more curious about what that man's dreams have to do with what Andrea and Eve are discovering. I'm sure it will all come together, but Samantha, David and the tapes are not at all interesting to me at this point.

Jimilyn (uruviellowen) OK...80% through now and it's starting to come together. I don't know if it's how it was transcribed into Kindle edition or what, but there are some sentences that make very little sense. Either they're incomplete or get all tangled up with another sentence somehow...and neither sentence is complete. Fortunately that only happens occasionally. However, I hope I haven't missed anything important. ;oD

The sentence thing is perplexing, but as you say, it's not too often. I've been spirited away by other things lately, but will carry on again soonish :)

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments Well, I finished reading about an hour ago. I'm glad I didn't give up on it, although it was far from being a great read for me as I found the greater part of the present day sections jarring - I'd have been happy with the dream sections. But it was well-plotted, even if at times there seemed too many named characters to keep track of.

Brian Boru was a historical character, and the author seems to have based the latter part of the action in the dream sequences loosely on what's known about his life.

Jimilyn (uruviellowen) I hope to finish up this weekend. Busy, busy at school with several late evenings working away. My kindle is laying on my bed just waiting for me to reaad a bit before going to sleep, but I've been too sleepy for that.

I think it's an interesting concept to have the reincarnations of the dream sequence characters coming together again in present day; however, like you, I'd have been perfectly happy with just the dream sequences. I did like the way the author wove the two time periods together though. Up to this point, my favorite present day character is Ryerson, and he's one of the characters who hasn't had as much "page time."

Jimilyn (uruviellowen) I finished up this morning. I enjoyed the read even though the last part seemed to wrap up rather quickly. Since I was reading on the kindle, I clicked to go to the next page...and there wasn't one. I thought about it and although the threads of the story were resolved, *I* didn't feel complete. However, it was truly a fun read. I'm glad the group did it for a group read, or I might not have ever come across it.

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments I'm glad you enjoyed it, Uruviel. wonder if anyone else in the group read it.

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) I read it a few years ago and enjoyed it. My review is posted somewhere here on Goodreads.

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments Ancestral, I think I picked it up from a post of yours on the Wiccan/Pagan Fiction Recommendations thread, but I can't get into it for some reason - GR now tells me that it can't find the page.

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) GR seems to have lost a lot of pages from groups recently. :(

message 25: by Nell (new) - rated it 3 stars

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments Really? I wonder where they've gone. I'm not active on other groups now, although I do still belong to a few.

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Apparently, you can access them by going through your old notifications and clicking the link there. So far, there has been no comment from Goodreads on the issue plaguing many a group.

message 27: by Nell (new) - rated it 3 stars

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments I don't keep my old notifications - I hope we don't lose any more threads :(

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) GR report they have updated the site and the problem should be resolved. If it's still happening, I'd report it on the appropriate thread.

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments Thanks for the link - I was all set to report it, but it's back now :)
